Antenna broke!

So, about a year ago my antenna decided that whatever used to make it go up and down wanted to break. The radio stations all still work pretty well, except for a few FM stations (that are probably quite a distance away from where I'm trying to hear them from, anyways).

I took it to my local Toyota dealer in which they said it;d be @ least 75, but no more than 150...so seeing as how it still works just fine I decided to continue to let it do it's own thing (or in this case) not do anything at all.

Now here's my question: does anyone know how to change one (or at least get to it to figure out what was broken and actually needs to be replaced)?! The dealer mentioned removing the passenger side door panel (and probably some other things) just to get to it...any ideas?!?

Antenna Replacement

I have two 4Runners and haven't had either very long. Both have broken Antennas. Imagine that. I'm going to order replacements from Crutchfield.com. They come with a complete set of installation instructions and good phone support if you need it.

Seems I spoke too soon. Crutchfield doesn't carry the Motorized antenna for my 99 model

I had the same problem with my 2000 model...but my antenna popped out along with the plastic piece that apparently connects to whatever motor makes the antenna go up and down..does anyone know how to fix this to avoid droppin $75+ for an antenna to a radio i barely use

I'm in the same boat and looking at what it'll take to replace my antenae. I found this tutorial on you-tube that does a pretty good job explaining how to replace the mast. The video is on a Honda accord, but it should work the same:

The replacement mast runs $38-50 from the different parts houses I've found online.

I had to replace my antenna. Some say you need to get to the motor, but I fixed it by installing a new antenna without getting to the motor. My write up his here. By the way, it still works fine.

One reason you still get some stations is because there is a secondary antenna on the right rear side window.

My 2000 had the same problem. If you still hear the motor when you turn the radio on, it may just be your mast and plastic track that raises and lowers the ant that's broken. You can buy a new OEM ANT mast on ebay cheap, the one's currently listed are under $20 - see ebay link below:

Mine came with simple instructions on how to re-thread the new mast into the motor just by undoing the mast base ontop and turning the radio on\off to get the old track out. There is however, a 50\50 chance you'll get all the old plastic track out completely. If you can't, you'll then need to get access to the motor, which unfortunately is only accessible by removing the front side panels like the dealer said. I bought & tried the $20 mast option first, but ended up going to the dealer to have them pull the side panel(s). I requested they use the OEM part I bought on ebay (Toyota was charging like $60 for the same mast\track part I paid $20 for)
