I just installed a new radio/navigation system in my 2001 4-Runner. The antenna has two connections for the antenna itself - one small diameter plug and one larger plug. The dealer (Crutchfield) told me to plug in the larger of the two into the back of my new radio. They said the second wire is not needed and there is no receptacle for it. The radio receives OK - but, every time I go under power lines I get a lot of static. This was never a problem with the old radio. I assume the second, smaller connector has a purpose. Suggestions?

I had the same thing when I changed mine from a factory HU to an aftermarket one.
The wire in the glass on the pass side rear window in the back is an antenna that Toyota calls a "diversity" antenna. Mainly for AM but I did notice a difference on FM too.
You need these 2 things if you want to use both the wires in the dash.

Did the OEM HU you removed have navigation? I was under the impression that the smaller plug went to the GPS antenna near the interior rear view mirror (at least on my 4th gen). When I swapped out my OEM nav HU with an aftermarket, I just plugged in the large one and it has worked fine since then.
