I have a Cobra 18 WX ST II in my runner and every now and then it decides it doesn't want to work. Kolby and I checked all the wiring (and it must be done right 'cause I helped wire his up and his works perfectly fine). Everything checks out. Maybe it's the radio? Any thoughts guys? kthx.

What is the SWR reading from your antenna? If your antenna SWRs are too high it can F up your radio

I have the same radio and had a similar issue. Since there's very little, if any, space behind the unit when it's in the dash (if that's where you put it), my power wire had gotten crimped and damaged. Re-wired with a slightly lower gauge (larger wire) and haven't had an issue since. Sounds like a short, which was my issue. Good luck!

check and then RE-check ALL connections.
Ive seen lots ot times, where either or both connections come lose, but check the mic connection to the radio, and check the coax connection into the radio, both can come lose from vibrations, Ive seen it many times.

Then check to make sure you have a good CLEAN ground, and make sure the positive connection is clean, IF all checks out good, then its prob the radio itself.
good luck, keep us posted.

I have the same model. Are you getting nothing at all when you turn it on? I'd say 6 or 7 times out of 10 when I turn mine on, I get nothing, only the 'scan' indicator lights up. Then I'll randomly turn it on (when I don't need it) and it works. All in all, I'm not sold on the Cobra. I think I'm going to pull it out, put in a double DIN head unit and stick a mini-Uniden into my ashtray slot.

I'm off Wednesday so I'll probably pull everything apart and redo it. I need to tune my radio badly... I just don't have a spare coax cable nor do I really want to buy one. Every now and then when I turn the radio on, you'll hear the initial "pop" but it doesn't actually power on... does that make any sense? Then other times nothing happens at all. I'll keep y'all posted, thanks for the replies.

"doesn't want to work"?
Does this mean that it doesn't transmit or receive?
OR
Does this mean that it doesn't turn on?
