Any experience with selling to CARMAX?

I bought a 4 runner and looking to sell the car it is replacing. Any of you guys ever sold anything to car max. This is a 07 highlander with 120k miles. What can I expect, a very low ball offer I would assume.....

I've never actually sold to them, but based on what I know a few friends have gotten, I would expect KBB "fair" trade in value or less.

A friends 4.0 ranger blew a head gasket and did damage. Inexplicably, carmax bought it. He needed a ride to get to work and left with a lumina.

I sold my 2016 Fiesta ST to Carvana and had a smooth transaction.

I had it listed on Craigslist for $15,500 with the plan to take $14,500 for it. I received no real interest after a month or so. I got a Carvana appraisal online, and they came back at $14,350.

I made the deal, and have no complaints!

I sold two cars to them after they sat in the classified section or other sites way to long. I got a fair price from them for both. For both, I was out within an hour with a check in hand. If you want to get a bunch of low ball offers, list it yourself. There are other places that will buy used vehicles that compete with CarMax.

They wanted to give me $2500 for a 2010 VW Golf in 2016. I sold it myself for almost twice that. I think it depends on the vehicle. Over 100k I wouldn't expect a great price, but its a Highlander so it should have a decent second market value.

I sold my last two cars to CarMax after listing them on Craigslist and other sites. Both cars had over 175K miles and had some lurking mechanical issues. Based on their condition, CarMax gave me a fair deal on both occasions which approximated KBB estimates. It was very pain free and would do it again.

Note that CarMax will inspect your vehicle and write you an offer, which is non-negotiable and they are very clear about that. The offer stays open for a certain amount of days and it is "take it or leave it." Once you accept, you are walking out of there with a check in hand in about an hour.

Yes, if you sell it on your own you may get a little more money, but the convenience was well worth it to me.

I went to Carmax to see what they would give me for my 06 Lexus ES330. Was lowballed $2,500 less than what it was worth. Glad the others had a better experience.

I have sold 3 cars to carmax, 2 in the last few months. My F150 hadsome electrical gremlins and I didn't want to deal with any blowback going private party. Carmax has always given me offers at or above what I was hoping minus 1 car that I ended up trading with the dealer, but they were maybe $100 more. As long as the car is under 100k mileage you can usually get a decent offer.

Sold them my 2nd Gen 4runner when I bought my 3rd Gen from them.

Now remember this was 14 years ago but it was a seamless experience. The 2nd Gen 4Runner I was selling them was in need of some work and it had a cracked windshield but they gave me more than I expected.

I sold 2 vehicles to them and had no issues. Easy process and fair price. Both were fairly low mileage vehicles- less than 40k miles on them so that probably made a difference.

Local Toyota dealers always low-ball me. I show them the Car Max bid - they go back to the mgrs. office and huddle - come out a few mins later with a trade-in that matches Car Max.

I was just going to post almost the exact same thing. Carmax offered a low $10,500 on my trade in. Toyota offered $7500. BB was around $12,500. In the end Toyota match the Carmax so I took it.

We sold a vehicle to CarMax outright without buying one from them. It went great, they transferred titles, plates, everything. Painless.

Sold many cars to Carmax, every single time they have offered well over the dealer. There was only one time where the offer was exactly the same on an old junker. Planning to sell an old 2010 Lexus RX to them soon (waiting on Tesla order), I'm not even bothering with the dealer anymore.
