Just wondering if there are any fans of the cancelled show "Firefly" on here.
The show was cancelled by Fox in 2002, after only showing 11 episodes. It has been hailed as one of the best all time sci-fi shows ever, and certainly the best to get cancelled in such short order.
I wasn't aware of the TV series, but went to watch the Hollywood movie, "Serenity" (based on the Firefly series) when it came out this fall. It blew me away how well it was written, with well developed plot lines, subtitles, and character development. It blends a unique mix of a western with futuristic sci-fi - and does it quite well.
This weekend, we had 2 other couples over to watch the pilot movie (the entire series is out in box set). My wife had really enjoyed the series, and she normally is not a sci-fi fan, so we thought the ladies would like it too. Sure enough, they were really taken with it. I then gave them DVD box sets of their own.
The whole thing is quite the sleeper, and I'm finding out it has a very rabid fan base, with numerous websites. Fox really flubbed it with the promotion of Firefly, and butchered it in the prime time line-up. The promo for the Serenity movie wasn't effective either.
Yet this thing is a really great story, told very well! Done at least as good as any of the later Star Wars, and as good or better than most Star Treks (of which I was a big fan). It has all the makings of a classic sleeper.
The movie, Serenity, comes out Tuesday (Dec. 20th) on DVD. We are all planning to go over to a friend's world-class home theater to make an event out of it! (you'd have to see this building to believe - probably in the $250,000-350,000 range)
