Any idea what the problem is ?

I have a 2004 4Runner with a V8. It has 4WD that is engaged all the time (no 2WD mode).

The first time my problem happen, I was in the grocery store. I was accelerating to get moving, and the front transmission sounded like it was racing (sounded like it was in low mode). The RP's did not increase as if it were in 4L mode, but the front transfer case sounded like it was reving very high. After about a day, these noises stopped happening.

Then it happened again a week later...lasted a few days.

Any idea with what is wrong with it ?

2004 4Runner Limited V8, 165000 miles.

Front transfer case?? Do you mean the front differential? If so and it was whining you may have a bad front diff. Can you explain more what you mean?

I'm not entirely following what you're saying...

What do you mean by "Front Transfer Case" as there's only the transfer case that's bolted to the transmission (it'd be about under the 2nd row footwell) and the front and rear differentials.

Are saying the front differential was growling/whining? I'm a bit lost on the description of your issue to be honest. Did this occur during a dry day? Or was it rainy/icy?
