Any major problems with your 4 runner...

I just moved out of a 2007 highlander. I bought it with the intentions of going 200k plus miles. About 120k miles, the timing chain started slapping around. Toyota tried to save a buck and went from bullet proof metal guides to plastic. this is a major internal repair. Just a little disappointed considering the legacy of Toyota.

Anyway, I bought a 4runner due to the reputation of the bullet proof engine/drive train.

Any of you experience any kind of major failure with your 4 runner that was not contributed to abuse?

Just curious....

only at 40K on mine and other than a leaky front KDSS piston that was replaced under warranty she has been solid..

Going back a few years here. My 1988 4Runner's timing belt began rattling a little at maybe 150k miles (worn guide), but the service department assured me it was nothing to worry about. They were right - drove it to 305k miles and never touched the chain.
 
2013 Trail with 60K. No problems, no leaks, no rattles, no squeaks. It as been on a few rough trails with no issues. Just runs like a 4Runnner.
Just added a Sienna AWD that will stay on road, but expecting the same.

Did/does it rattle when you crank it in the morning and go away once oil pressure is up?
 
I'm on my third 4Runner, had 2 x 4th gens and now a 5th gen, no major mechanical issues on any of them. Traded in for less miles each time. Just had a needle bearing in my front dif replaced due to a TSB, however it was a known issue and replaced under warranty. Made a grinding noise but nothing too bad other than that. You'll definitely get a more bulletproof engine/trans with a T4R vs a Highlander

My wife has a 2006 Highlander and it has a timing belt. Supposed to be replaced at 90K. Her's has been bullet proof, only maintenance and alternator replacement at over 120K now. I think those were some of the best vehicles made. Minus some door dings and car seat damage, damn thing looks brand new. Dash is flawless.

I think the 4runner is typically considered the most reliable vehicle of the last ten years. One of the main reasons I bought one, so I never have to worry about it. My brother's wife has a 2010 4runner with zero problems.

No, you could actually hear it at idle and when warm, but a little less. I kept Mobil1 in it the whole time, and kept up with changes, so the wear was probably very slow. I got rid of it 12 years ago due to age, mostly.
 
4runner

got 286k on 99 limited 4wheel drive..just maintain it..an injector went bad at 285k..other than that..nothing but a pleasure to own past 10 years.
 
Just got my rig back from the stealership. The rear window actuators scratched the defogger lines so they stopped working. Ended up replacing the window in addition to the actuators.

Thank goodness I am still under warranty! :couch2:
