I've found the dropper seat post to be QUITE a nice feature, mainly when climbing and you're pushing yourself hard! My BMC TF02 has the RockShox Reverb Stealth works very well; no issues with maintaining seat height when just spinning and is easily adjusted as needed.
In my daily rides, we have some places where we have steep rocky drops and I am setting on my back wheel. Well, I'm 6'4" and my CG is much different than the 5'5" guy. In these situations, I would think I could drop the seat (get it out of the way..) for the descents and when it levels out bring it back up to regular height. Same for going through the rock gardens. Drop it, pedal through and move on. My riding partner is on the small light side so his CG is usually much better in those situations with all things being equal.
