Looking for a used MTN BIKE in NC

Im in the Winston Salem Greensboro NC area and looking for used Medium frame Men bike to start riding for more activity. Im not looking for a top of the line hard trail bike but something decent to grow with. I have been told to go Specialized such as a hardtail or Pitch. Does anyone on here have anything in this area thats reasonable?

I wouldn't narrow my search down to a specific brand. Most brands are very similar until you get to the higher end bikes. Geometry, frame quality/material, and build are all much more important (and don't forget wheels). Specialized tends to be more expensive to be honest, so you never get the best bang for your buck.

Still trying to get back in shape after a winter where I've either been rained out or sick with the virus du jour going around. This Motorway ride was painful. Hard to believe there was a time I finished the Counting Coup. I couldn't imagine doing that today :yield:

I am looking to get into mountain biking also and would like some suggestions on a good beginner bike. Someone suggested I get a Trek Marlin 6 or 7. Is that a good starter and what other brands should I look at? Sorry for the noob questions.

Man, I've got to get down there again for some riding soon! My first 2 MTB trips to the Southwest were week-long trips to the ABQ area. Got GREAT beta from Charlie at Two Wheel Drive - Bike Magazine had just done a great article on him and the local riding scene. I randomly called him on the phone the next week, and we talked for an hour. A week later a box full of books and maps, even hand-drawn trail maps showed up on my door at no charge!!

When we arrived, he told us where to camp, eat, drink beer and ride. (We were originally planning a trip to Moab, but I convinced my riding buddies to go to Albuquerque instead - they thought I was nuts. But it turned out great.) We camped in the Cedro Peak area, but rode all over the place - Windsor trail (up and down), South Boundary, foothills, a bunch of other stuff in the Jemez and Sangre de Cristos.

Those trips were the precursor to me moving from the NE / NYC metro area to Durango

Any big name brand (Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Niner, etc) will give you a good hard tail starter bike for between $500-$800 depending on the components and front fork. I recommend this to all people who are starting out. This bike will be a good learner bike so eventually you can upgrade.

I am just getting back in to it. I went out and dusted off my old Mongoose DH 1.5 from the barn. I have not rode it in years.

It didn't need much thankfully! A little tuning ant tightening here and there. Clean and lube the chain and some new tubes...

It felt great to be back on it. I know it is nothing special but I was pretty rough on it. However, It is mine and I love it. (like my 4Runner)

A new bike just is not in the cards right now. (Or a new 4Runner for that matter) Maybe someday...

Used to be pretty avid cyclist long time ago but I still have my bikes. Cannondale Delta V hard tail I got in 1994 and a 1997 Specialized FSR downhill full suspension. I'm just getting back into riding again, trying to keep myself from feeling my age.

I have a bunch of bikes.

Here is my project from yesterday.

It's a Monstercross bike. A mountain bike and a cross bike had a love child. I use it for gravel roads and paths. It's heavy as hell!!

I got this bike from a guy who "wanted to learn how to build bikes". It had so many boo boos I end up laughing every time I work on it. (I took it apart completely when I got it in 2013. He screwed all kinds of stuff up! )

I finally got around to putting some brown bar tape on it. It used to have black tape. The color is crazy but it's getting closer to matching the Brooks saddle I put on there. He didn't tape down the cable housings under his bar tape ��

It is a Frankenstein. I put Thomson and King bits on it, but the frame is the lowest level of Chinese steel. The bike is pretty neat though and bulletproof. Check out the unique rear dropouts. You can run panniers, full gears, or single speed, and tires as big as regular 29er knobbies down to road skinnies. I have some nice Clement gravel tires on it now.

It's funny that he wanted to learn on this bike. It has 9 speed road brake/shifters brifters, a 9 speed MTB crank, and a 9 speed cassette and rear derailleur.

The thing that sunk him was the front derailleur. He tried using a bunch of MTB ones. A road 105 triple ended up working, I think it was. That took like a year of tinkering with it to get right and tons of digging on the internet.

I'm trying to get the bar tape color right without dropping $100!! This dollar eBay tape is the wrong shade, but super comfy!

Just turned 40, and I still act like I ride.

It's just getting cool enough in Vegas again to get out early.

Picked up a Giant Anthem 29er a few years back. Did Moab Whole Enchilada trail on my third ride of the season last year.
