I have a 96 4Runner with the factory locker, a 1.5 inch lift, and am running 32 inch Mickey Thompson ATZ's on a stock rim size. I recently went on a Jeep run down on Borego Springs with Terra del Sol and two bud's; One had a 2002 Jeep Rubicon with a 3 inch suspension lift and a 2 inch body lift, and the other was driving a custom Jeep with a 6 inch suspension lift and a 4 inch body lift.
At the start of the day when we hit up the trails I was a little hesitant to take my baby on the harder trails due to the size of the 4Runner compared to the Jeep's, so I stuck to the easiest trails. (I never realized how much larger the 4Runner is than Jeeps until I was surrounded by them.)
As the day progressed, I had a '08 Jeep Rubicon Limited Edition following me around, saying that he figured anywhere I could go and not get stuck, he could go too. Right about that time, I started down a trail that was marked easy/advanced (No other way down, wtf?) and about 100 feet in the damn trail started to really get ****ed up...we're talking switch backs that I had no chance to turn inside and I had to back up and reposition myself multiple times. It was pretty rough terrain too, but I made it through (lots of tire rubbing though). As the day progressed I started to go down more and more advanced trails, following the Jeep's with no problems.
After we stopped for lunch, we headed out again and eventually made our way to this hill that was completely torn up and made of this power-like dirt. My bud in the jeep decided to take the easy trail off to the side, but I decided to hammer it and go straight up this ***** since they had been making fun of the 4Runner the entire time. After two failed attempts, I reversed down the hill a little ways and gunned it and tore ass up the hill. A bud in the truck with me had his window down and got absolutely sand blasted with dirt when he stuck his head out the window, and the entire back seat of the 4Runner was covered in rocks and dirt. I made it up and stopped, then looked down the hill. I didn't know at the time, but I had about 5 Jeeps behind me, and now that they had seen the 4Runner make it up the harder part of the hill, they all tried to go up as well.
The first two Jeeps couldn't make it up and almost ended up getting stuck and eventually made it up the easier run, but the third and fourth guys learned and floored it up the hill; The first Jeep had some kids in the back that got absolutely covered in dirt and sand, it was hilarious because the guy kept letting off the throttle, would slow down and almost get stuck, and then hammer it again, the kids were screaming bloody murder by the end, lol.
At the end of the day, I was thoroughly impressed with the 4Runner. This is by far the hardest wheeling I've done to date with the truck and it was begging for more. The fact that it was able to keep up with a heavily modified Rubi with only a 1.5 inch lift and 2 inch bigger tires really impressed me, and now I have many more money sucking plans for this beast
