Anybody ever run 5.29 gears with 33's?

I know I'm bringing this up from the dead, but at least yall know I can use the search! Plus it's not like good info expires...

Why do people not like the higher rpms? I understand if it's a long distance hwy commuter but is 3-3500 rpm that bad? I just picked up a '98 4Runner with a 3.4 and the 5 speed and am looking to regear to 5.29s with 33s or MAYBE 35s in the future. On the grimjeeper gear calculator 5.29 and 285s put me at like 2975 @ 65mph and about 3200 @70. These trucks don't make peak torque till 3600 or so anyway, so what's the issue?

I had a built first gen for almost 10 years, 3 of which I was running 5.71s on 35s with the 22re and it was awesome power-wise. I also just did a trip to Tahoe in the '98 where I had it on cruise control in 4th gear @3k rpm/65mph on the way there and I averaged 16mpg with mountain driving and wheeling. Doesn't seem too bad to me?

If you really plan on 35's and dont do over 70mph the 5.29's might do just fine. But if you do over 70mph and 33's are what you most likely will run than 4.88 is a better choice.

Just remember when running 35's you will have to do a bit more trimming and cutting on the firewall.

I'd say 75% of my driving is under 60mph, unless I get a job where I have to commute before the regear, I'm gunna gear it to the speeds I drive, obviously ymmv...

Not sure really. Going up mountain passes I disable OD so its pretty high going up the hill. On the flats I can get away with OD on.

I would do a lot better with some 4.88's thats for sure. 4.10's suck on 33's. But for the money I would rather put it towards a SC than gears.

I wouldn't even regrear with just 33s unless you are going to put a full carrier locker In then it might be worth it. I had 33s and 410s with my 4cyl and it was not bad
35s will defiantly need 5.29s

I guess I just really like the pep that deeper gears bring (looks like it's just me too haha).

I do know it's livable though. On my first gen, I ran stock 3.90 with 30's, 34x10.5 tsl's then 38x12.5 tsl's before I regeared to the 5.71's. Then ran those with both sets of those tsl's (by then the 34's were more like a 32-33) then 35x13.5 toyo mt's.

Granted that was with an old 22re, but after the gears I loved how it drove. Personal preference I know, just curious why more people don't gear deeper. Especially cause in my experience, under 65 the mpg weren't much worse than stock...

5.29 on 33s would be trash. 4.10s with a 5 speed is perfectly fine.

Even with a 4 cylinder 4.10s are drive able. I'd personally recommend going 4.88 later when the 35s are on.

Mines a 2nd Gen with factory 4.88's and 32's mud terrains. Plus supercharger and I have had zero issues ever. Diff is with ZUK as we speak so he'll tell me how the stock gears have held up. 245,000 miles on original gears. Probably 45,000 with 32's.

What's acceptable for gearing or RPM's seems to be very much personal opinion . But I can tell to not completely trust those gear calculators . I have a 5 speed and run 4:88s and 255/85R16s and 2975 @ 65mph and about 3200 @70 is exactly what I get get .

Thanks for the info hounddogman, I appreciate the real world numbers. It looks like your numbers are about 300 rpm higher than the calculator says it "should" be...that could be a game changer for me, I like the sound of your numbers.
