Anybody have any problems running GL5 in a five speed?

After a little research, it appears SOME GL5 oils have additives that the synchros in the W56 don't like, while some work fine. With GL4 getting harder to find on the shelves (at least around here), and Redline MT90 costing more per gallon than gas, I'm curious what folks are using.

So to the poll - are you using a GL5 75w90 in your W56? Which brand? For how long? Any hard shifting troubles?

I run GL5 and don't have any shifting problems. I can't remember the brand of the top of my head. I've been running it for about 40k miles. Well changed once in that 40k for maintenance.

I've run the 80w-90 Walmart gear oil. I believe it's GL5. I only use because I seem to change it out all the time. I've noticed the 2nd gear syncro has gotten a little worse. That could also be from driving style as well. Just my 2 cents.

Did I say "getting harder to find"? Try "impossible". I've had the guys at O'Reillys and NAPA check their catalog, the only GL4 still out there is an 85w90.

Redline MT90 it is, I guess.

When I first picked up my '85, I had issues shifting from 1st to 2nd when it was cold. I put in some Royal Purple Synchromax oil; had NO shifting issues afterwards. Worked great! Doesn't say GL4 or 5; so not sure what type it is.

I have occasional difficulty shifting into 1st gear. No grinding, just feels something mechanical blocking the lever. The Shifter seat thingy had been replaced wit one from Marlin Crawler, but still same problem. I tried over-filling with quarter quart f gear oil (discussed on a thread somewhere, thinking maybe the higher level would reach and lubricate whatever it is that's snagging. No effect.

Has anybody had this problem that may have been fixed by using GL5? Couldn't find GL5 in conventional oil, either, so I think I'm gonna have to try Redline, too.

I've been running Royal Purple 75W90 for years in my whole drivetrain with no probs.

Good to know, thanks guys. I ordered the Redline from Amazon yesterday, but it's easier to find the Royal Purple on shelves so maybe I'll try that next time.

Redline is reeeally good stuff. It is what I use in my differentials/transfer case. So you don't have to worry about your choice in using it.

I think I have to exact same issue as you describe. This usually happens after I've been driving for a while. Also feels like something mechanical is blocking the shifter from going into 1st. This only happens when I am sitting at a light in neutral, for example, and as soon as I try to switch into 1st it doesn't let me. No grinding, just physically won't let me.

Only way I have "fixed" this issue, is to partially shift into 2nd first. Then switch to 1st. Works every time; just takes an extra second to get going from a stand still.
