anybody know what gears i need for my new tires?

i've seen alot of people figure out what gears they have by looking at the vin number, but not sure how to do it or look it up. i have a 95 4x4 auto sr5 and i just finished lifting it 3" all around and i'm picking up some 33" tires next weekend. i heard that it's common for the autos to come stock with the 4.88's (which is what i think i'll need for the 33"s right?)

also in the case that i do have to re-gear, should i install lockers at the same time? (i plan on doing it eventually)

I believe it's actually uncommon for 4.88s to be found, 4.56s are usually the stock auto gears. With an auto I wouldn't run anything less than 4.88s, and I'd throw at least a rear locker in while you have 3rds out/bought.
 
I have actually seen some V6 automatics with 4.88 gears and that would be fine for 33's Look at the tag in the driver side door jam. It will have some codes on it near the vin. G29 is the code for 4.10 gears, G27 is for 4.56 I believe and maybe its G26 for 4.88's. I could be wrong, but checking and posting up what you see may get a correct response
 
A bit of mis-info here.
To clear things up, 4.88's came on trucks with the factory 31" tire package/auto trans combo.
If you're trying to locate some used 3rds at a salvage yard, the axle code would be G142 in a 4 cyl truck or G144 in a 6 cyl truck.

If you're having the R+P changed in your current diffs, having a locker installed at the same time will save you some $$ on labor, as everything is already apart.

4.88 is an ideal ratio for 33" tires with a manual trans.
 
thanks for the replies, i was wondering what is a good locker price/quality to buy, and granted that i dont have the 4.88 gears, are there any other parts i should buy with the gears to do the re-gear? (bearings, seals n such?) my truck has 31's on it with an auto tranny and trailer setup, but not sure at to what is stock equip.

i will look for the code on my door jam and see what i can figure out

Yes, any reputable shop should insist on using a master install kit (bearings, etc) when installing a new R+P.

You and a zillion other Toyota owners.

Running 33's on the stock 4.10's is common. It's right on the edge of should regear and need to regear. The engine is running pretty far out of it's optimum powerband, but the loss of power and MPG is still tolerable for most people.

But if you want to regain the lost power and MPG, 4.88 is the optimum ratio for 33's and a manual trans.
 
i checked my rear axle, couldnt find any numbers. but the door jam says a/t g254. is this the 4.10?

i also noticed that it says stock tire size is 225/75/r15 and i have 31/10.5/r15 on there now

This is my first time posting so i hope that putting up a ref to another site isn't wrong but if you go to Gearratiosanddiffs you will find pleanty of info on toyota gears and then some. I don't know how to create a link to the page or i'd of just did that. hope this is helpful.
 
im runnin 4.56's (thats what you have) and 33x12.5's with my little 22re and it goes down the road like a champ, on my last tank i got 24 mpg but it was mostly highway driving...

thanks again for the info, i'll try the stock gears for now and see how i like it, but i'm thinking with how sluggish it already is that i'll need to put in 5.29 at some point. does anybody know the relative cost or have any links as to where i could buy the gear set online, and master kit? i'll prob end up doing the work myself (the reason i bought my truck is to learn) but want to have all the gears and parts so i can just go go go all weekend till its done.

please feel free to interject any advice or tips about regearing a diff, i've never done it before, trannys and engines yes but diffs no.

also i noticed according to my axle code i have 4.56 4pinion "open diff". what is best granted my truck is my daily driver as well as my mountain goat... open, or limited slip? or lockers? i'm pretty new to the 4x4 scene and kinda clueless about differentials

those are some awesome links, thanks! i figure i'll save up some extra play money and go all out when i rebuild them and to 5.26 front and rear with lockers and new bearings. are autolockers any good? i like the fact that they are under 300 a pop and i can drive on street and offroad. for what i'm building my truck for (mild to somewhat serious offroading, nothing extreme) i'm thinking these might be the best option? or is it best to send the money and put in some air lockers or electric lockers? thanks -nick
 
My personal preference is for the selectable lockers. ARB and the Toyota E-locker. I just gotta have my streetability.
