Anyone changed there own front Wheel Bearings on a 4th gen yet???

35mm nut on the 4x4

no special tools or torquing needed on the 6 lug 2wd unit. simply unbolt the old and bolt on the new. the assembly's nut is already torqued and staked during assembly.

Hey guys, I've got no post count to start a new thread (long time lurker) so I was hoping maybe someone could give me some assistance here.

I have been dealing with a slight vibration and speed dependent growling/howl that can be heard when going straight and worsens slightly when turning to the right. It goes away entirely when turning left. I thought surely this is the front left wheel bearing and replaced it with a unit from nj636, but to my surprise the issue persists. Inspecting the old assembly leads me to believe it was just fine. Any other culprits that seem likely to you guys? My brakes appear to be in good order and I did not see any grease or cracked cv boots, but I was planning to try changing the cv axle next unless someone can offer a better suggestion or diagnosis.

Thanks for any and all advice/help!

Based on my experience when I started this thread years ago it is a rear bearing. Read the thread from the beginning. I explained how I thought it was the left front, replaced it, and proceeded to replace rt front, rt rear, and it was not until the left rear that the noise/grind went away.

Anybody happen to know the specs for the hub bolts?? I bought the hub and bearing separately and want to get them pressed together but I'd have to get the old hub pressed out of the old bearing for 4 bolts and I'm not really looking to pay more for that, rather pick up brand new hardware with that money

Woops, not sure how I missed that. Must have skimmed right past it as I was reading on my phone originally. Thanks for the input, I'm going to take a look at the left rear bearing tomorrow after work.

Try the right wheel bearing first. From my experience it the sound goes completely away when turning left that means the right wheel bearing is your culprit. Best way to check is to jack the wheel up by the LCA, Grab the tire at 12 and 6 and see if you have any play wiggling it. If you do, the bearing is shot. Good news is that you will have a part ready to go. If the bearing seems fine then proceed to check the rear ones.

Ding ding ding! It was in fact the right. I knew I should have jacked up that side to check when the left felt tight. But I'm going ahead and replacing both just to have them equally fresh.

Do I win a prize? Lol I'm happy you found the culprit. Once you're in there check the seals to make sure they aren/t destroyed. They're pretty cheap to pick up and install. :thumb:

Swapped the front right bearing and hub on my wife's '04 V8 today in about 3 hours, having never done this repair before.

Used a pre-assembled unit purchased here:
2003-2012 4Runner GX470/460 4x4 complete KOYO Front Wheel Hub bearing assembly | eBay

And used this write-up
https://www.4runners.com/threads/installing-wheel-bearing-assembly.343/

And this video:
(It's in Russian I think but the visual helped)

If you're hesitating because it seems too complicated, it really wasn't too difficult. Like others have said, not too much worse than changing pads and rotors.

Local shops quoted $700 for the job, GFY no thanks

Just bought a front wheel hub assembly 4x4 for my o4 4 runner from nj636. Hopefully it gets here soon :). And will post pics of repair

nj636 my issue did turn out to be a bent spindle. Bought a used one, alignment was good before, replaced and there was a major camber lean! Here's a pic of the lean... Lol

Wow! So it was the used spindle after all. Glad you figured it out.
