Anyone elses 3.4 have that tapping sound?

I have noticed since i bought this truck that it has a distinct tapping sound, almost like as the belts are making revolutions they are tapping when sitting at a stop in drive. Im sure some of you notice the tap to when at drive throughs or sitting behind another car at a light....right? My buddy pointed out to me this week that my tap was significantly louder than his 96 4r.

Im wondering if the fact that i used single electrode plugs in my last change could cause this..(I was wondering why the originals were dual lol)...I should have known something was wrong when i thought that my truck ran "less peppy" after the change..

Also...When giving the truck some gas from a stop..(about half way to the floor) i notice that the rear seems to squat alot and it feels like im driving a 20 year old lincoln town car. Shocks?

Bet its valve tap. Mine does it too. It probably needs a valve adjustment but I just started running 10w-30 instead of 5w-30 and that seemed to quiet it down a bit.

^this or also the evap canister makes a ticking/tapping noise, the evap canister ticking is just the toyota sound and nothing to worry about,

but if your valve lash is off you're going to want to get that adjusted and change your cover seals out while your at it. it's not the end of the world and you don't need to do it now now, but it is bad for your engine and can cause big problems if you run it like that indefinitely.....

get your buddy to give it gas while you listen under the hood with a mech stethoscope

You can thank the engineers at toyota for the squat while accelerating. The stock link setup has way to low % anitsquat. Meaning some of the torque to the rear axle pulls on the links and forces the rear end down

Like stated could be valve tap, which sometimes is an indication of low oil. My talon would be about a 1/4 quart short of oil when she started too tap so I knew when too add oil. But in my Mitsu the valves have an oil valve that clogs and you will have tap no madder what you do. We had to install aftermarket revised lifters to fix the issue.

That only means the oil is thicker when cold. At operating temp its the same viscosity.

I dont think thats what he was getting at stinky... I think he was suggesting that the tapping sound could be a small leak at the manifold which would pulsate out as the truck idled causing a slight tap.

Ah!! I asked cause I just replaced my cat and now that the blaring "blap blap" noise is gone I can hear the engine finally, and Im hearing a slap or a tap sound. I was suspecting the manifold might have a leak, cause I can still hear a slight exhaust thrum or burble, like a leak somewhere. Maybe the tap is part of that too! That would put my mind to rest.

This 4runner is a federal emissions system, and Im wondering if its possible to remove the pass side exhaust manifold without pulling the engine? Id hate to do that again....I cant see loosening the manifold studs and being able to pry or move the manifold away enough to get at the gasket, so I assume I'll have to remove the entire pass side manifold and header. I just cant see how to do that without gaining access to the rear crossover pipe, all of which requires pulling the engine.

Check your vacuum lines in that area. A loose one on the canister made my 4Runner sound like a diesel.

I know this is an old post but its on the main page so im commenting.


Its called the Toyota tick, toyota engines valves are very loud and when your near a wall or other vehicle its gets very loud and makes you think there is an issue. check your oil if your worried but im sure the noise is normal as a yota can be ...tick..tick...tick..tick:

one source of this tick is the Vacuum Switching valve, if your charcoal canister is in the main engine compartment ( 2000 or newer).

the frequency of the ticking does not match the idle speed, if the ticking sound you are hearing gets faster when you rev, its not from the VSV.
