Im considering getting a dash cam for my 4runner. Ive been in 2 accidents both not my fault where there are two lanes that turn and both times the other driver went into my lane and tapped me, both times I got some major checks from their insurance (over $3500 total) and I only spent a few hundred fixing the issue, but my worry is if it happens again proving it wasnt my fault.

Also I am a college student in a college town and worried at night my car getting vandalized, so would be interested to know if there were camera that record 24/7 even when the car is off

I am a college student so dont have a fortune to spend but thinking in the $150 range, any idea?

thanks!

I'm glad you posted this as I had the same question. Both Amazon and eBay have quite a few car DVRs listed with lots of different features (e.g GPS, time stamp, auto looping, front and rear facing cameras). The only reason I haven't made a purchase is that I'm just not sure which is best and hope folks will chime in.

Not sure this thread is best here or elsewhere?

I have a one in my 4runner. I use a 1 GB SD card. Record 2 minute clips. Dont use 8 GB memory cards and don't format the memory card. IF you do, the dash cam will record all the way to the end of the card and say"card full".

It runs on the car battery and have no other power supply. If you want to keep it running during the night, you might have to give a direct 12 V. Don't know it will drain your battery overnight. Also once it reach the end, it will start over writing the old files.

So far it is working fine for me.

Down side.... everything discussed inside the truck gets recorded as well. So make sure, you will not give rides for chicks and talk dirty, if you do, make sure to delete the files before you get off the truck!

This is it:

I actually want a dash camera for the same purpose.
I want something stealthy, where someone walking by wouldn't see it and try to steal it.
Maybe something hidden behind rearview mirror or something.

Anyone have any more Links?

Search car dvr, car black box, or dash cam on Amazon or eBay. It's a bit of a tough search. Lots of what is available is sort of grey market (ships from Hong Kong and made by manufacturers with little U.S. presence. That isn't necessarily bad; it probably keeps prices down, put it is hard to get much by way of reviews. Also, tech support is probably lacking.

im gonna be buying one, ive wanted one for some time. i too have been in several accidents, none of them my fault, and only once whats i compensated for the damages to my vehicle (because the other driver lied and told stories). so its a smart investment if you ask me.

I use an old Iphone. Record while I'm driving, and if nothing happens during the trip, I erase it. Not the best camera made, but it gets the job done.

Just wanted to bring this up again, anyone have any dash cams they recommend? Had a stupid incident this morning of a young "disabled" driver tailgating me and trying to undertake me on a one lane road in a 25mph zone. Typically no cops around when you need them. Would love to get a dash cam so i could record this shit.

Got this a few days ago. Works fantastic. Front cam on unit, rear cam attached by a cable. You can use the rear camera as a backup cam as well as recording; small screen, but usable. Audio and video work well and it has auto startup.

Doesn't have wifi or GPS, but for $50 and dual cameras it is hard to beat.

a link would be helpful...

This might help w more info (I posted in a similar thread).

There is a pretty good review http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2012/9/18/a-car-dvr-with-a-wired-rear-camera.html here of the same or similar camera.

It seems to have a number of the important standard features:

Auto start
Event save (based on Gs or by pressing a button)
Auto over write
Dual cameras
Microphone

I got it on eBay. Shipped from China. A number of vendors carry it. Search 2.0" 720p car dvr dual camera and you should be able to find it.

I mounted in front of the rear view mirror:

Oh, I should mention that although written in an English-like dialect, the instructions are more Chinese than an MSG buzz in a dry cleaner. You'll be able to figure it out, however.

^^ X2...What he said...we need a link please ^^

Wow..ok when I posted this, Doc had not responded with his last two post? I guess my post is like on an 5 hour delay? Either that...or...I'm in the twilight zone?!? Anyway, disregard this...and thanks Doc for the link!
