Anyone have luck getting CV joint components?

I'd like to replace the 'tripod' (bearing assembly inside inboard CV joint) but Toyota doesn't seem to sell just that assembly. Do they have to be precision matched to the housing they ride in?

It's weird, you can get an entire OEM axle assembly for $350 but buying just one of the CV joints by itself is like $325. Except for CV boots it looks like it's all or nothin'.
