VF2A Transfer Case Gear Damage & Pics of internals

Hey guys,
I'm looking for pics of the internals of a disassembled VF2A to do some comparison.

I was installing new oil seals all around on mine today, and happened to peer down thru the shifter hole, and I can make out some wear on a spur gear. I cant quite figure out if I am looking at input shaft, output shaft, or a clutch/sycro. Whatever it is, there is obvious wear damage out towards the edges, and every gear tooth has a round dimple dead in the center.

This is the t-case that was found to be low on oil when I pulled it (it had 1/2 qt in it). Thus far everything else seems to be fine. No obvious heat damage to bearings, no shavings, and it made no strange noises before I pulled it. I am tempted to pull the front case cover off, but part of me says to just run it.

So I took it apart... It is the spur gear just behind the planetary that drives the oil pump gear. Something must have got between the two at some point - I'm guessing part of a bearing race maybe.

The magnet inside the tcase seemed ok for 16 years and 140k worth of use. I only found a couple small ferrous slivers.

At first glance I am tempted to just replace both gears and move on ($80), however I also found what I think is some spalling on the inner race of the front output shaft. The bearing is another $25, but it leads me to believe that there is more damage I may not have found.

I located a t-case for $218+core with less mileage supposedly from a 5-speed, so I think my path forward is clear.

So I picked up another tcase. This one has 113k miles. Looks to be in good shape. Took a look inside, and it also has the gear wear/damage on the oil pump gears!

Now I'm curious if its "normal." Anyone want to yank their t-case shifter and take a look?

i don't think id call it normal, but perhaps common? there must be something in there that's getting caught in the gears.

was yours making any noise, or give any indication there was a problem?

Agreed - "common"

Mine had no issues or noises. Just happened to notice it through the shifter hole.

My theory is that the pump gear was able to pick up some trash, since it operates so close to the sides of the case as well as the oil return path.

One final update: Beware that part #36284-35021 ($56) has been superseded by 36235-35H01 ($240), and very few are available. That's as good a reason as any to leave it alone.
