Anyone know what this storage area is/was for?

I have this storage area, that I haven't seen anyone mention or seen others with. What was it for originally? It even has a couple straps in it.

That's pretty cool! I have an 05 and have never seen or heard of this extra storage compartment before. I wonder if it has something to do with the JBL system not being there, i.e. I have the JBL system including the sub and I believe the OEM amp and sub are back in that exact location.....

Yup, it's just extra storage for those of us without JBL. It's got straps in there to hold stuff from rattling around but as far as I know it wasn't intended for anything in particular. I think I've got a medical kit and the cargo nets in mine.

Ahh... that explains the shape!

I have a recovery strap, gloves, and some small stuff in there while my hitch is in the plastic case it came with in a cargo organizer sitting in the back... I might have to do some rearranging!

Mine still had the hitch and wiring in boxes in there 'till a month ago, and I'm the second owner! Cargo net would've been nice, but bungies are good.

according to the manual, it says storage compartment for "stuff" lol...it is just a way to keep from wasting that space in the non JBL trucks.. on of my trucks has it and one don't..

It's not that it's a waste of space, it's just cheaper to manufacture a plastic cover than it is to manufacture an entirely new interior side piece. I have a similar one on my cruiser that is even more pathetic although it's not there because of missing stereo components.

It's used for what-ever you want to use it for.

I keep tie-down straps an bungee cords in there.

I wouldn't mind having one of those instead of a stupid JBL speaker. But I also can't say I really have much of a problem with storage. The hitch & pin, and a pair of work gloves live in the same cubby as the jack and tools. The cargo net lives in one of the cubbies on the top of the rear wheel wells; a tire plug kit lives in the other. Ratchet straps, fire extinguisher, e-tool, and other odds and ends live under the front seats.

But I could use a bigger bin for the coveralls and ice scraper!

yea, everyone else is right, because thats where my stock sub and amp are for JBL. Lucky for you though, i don't store my ball and hitch, or my cargo net, in my truck because it just slides around everywhere.
