Anyone look at these portable box dual battery setups??

I've been researching the dual battery thing for a while. Like this Off-Grid one but seems pricey, yet very high quality cables etc.

Then I came across this Aussie! And seems an interesting concept. I haven't seen any of these on T4R yet, so was just wondering.

As to portables... very easy to DIY your own. I have made multiple "solar generators" or chargeable power storage devices for various applications.

Not only can you get more value, you can build things that are generally higher end than something you could even buy.

Both links point to OGE's kit.

OGE has a nice kit for sure. I was really thinking about it for a long time. Just hard to justify the cost. I also decided I want to use the weight rated, front passenger location for the battery.

The portable boxes are nice for using while camping, etc. Not really useful when wiring accessory lighting, etc, like a true dual battery. They are 2 different things, used for 2 different purposes.

Only prob is that OGE puts the battery in the perfect place for an air compressor. I think I will use the Shrockworks kit and relo the air pump to put the battery directly opposite the stock one on the passenger side.

And I do love my Aussies.....just overall great folks....I free, that building something like this should be relatively easy. And even easier to mod. I've some solar panels I'd love to set up to charge the accessory battery....

Check out National Luna if you haven't heard of em. I'm running their Dual battery setup, and have been for over a year now. Amazing products, and they have a portable dual battery box that can be taken out. Using mine with the shrockworks dual battery tray. I have my compressor in the back on the passenger side like many others do.

[MENTION=50362]jayhat[/MENTION] Really just depends on the design... I have a portable that can be used like a dual battery setup, but it can be limiting depending on your needs.

I made it for a family member that wanted to be able to run an ARB fridge and did not want any modifications to the factory electrical system on his 5th Gen.

I basically wired up a small AGM, with a DC-DC charger which is fed off the rear accessory outlet.

The ARB has a built in transfer switch, so when plugged into the cars inverter, it defaults to AC power, and allows the full current of the rear 12v out let to charge the battery.

When the car is shut off, the fridge transfers over to DC power and the portable acts like a dual battery.

The design works very well, and allows you to use the factory electrical system within its safe operating parameter to accomplish something very similar to a true dual battery setup.

It looks sometimes DIY project that is being marketing for sale.

I wouldn't even bother buying something like that, it would be very easy to make.

the national luna is a good setup, but if you are on a budget you could build your own with a battery for the cost of the national luna without the battery. You can get a CTEK charger that allows for alternator or solar charging for ~$215, then just throw your battery in a $10 box and wire it up.

For what its worth, I thought the video explained some good fundamentals about dual battery setups. Good for a beginner to watch even if they go with another solution. Go Aussies!
