Anyone regret buying 255s over 285s?

I just went from a 255 BFG Mud to a 285 BFG A/T.

My cliff notes on the sizes:

1. The amount of trimming you'll need to do is significant, and spacers or less backspaced aftermarket wheels are necessary with the wider tire. I have sport flares that were already trimmed for 255's, and when I switched to 285's I noticed some areas that I had to hack more of the inside of the bumper flare. Not really a big deal though. The UCA and pinch weld are more of an issue with clearance, IMO.

2. The 285's look MUCH better to me, especially since I'm running a 17" wheel. 100% subjective, as mentioned above by someone else.

3. Availability of all terrains is almost non existent in the 255 and the price is higher.

If you're ok with the price difference and limited selection, go for it. They require less work and cost to make fit (no spacers or aftermarket wheels necessary). I run spidertax so the UCA rub was never a concern, but the pinch weld area and front bumper/ flares are.

Toyo makes the Open Country AT II, and the RT now in 255/80/17. And the cooper ST Maxx is an awesome tire available in a 255. Options are slightly limited, but things are getting better.

I hear ya. The Toyos are cool but really expensive. The Open Country don't seem aggressive enough for me and the ST Max are on my radar. I'm a BFG All Terrain fanboy and they don't make the KO2's in a 255. I saw that there's a 34x10.5x17 available and in a load range D, and I may go that route at some point. Easier to fit than a 315 because of the width, but they're a lot more expensive than a 285, which is why it's so easy to settle on 285's for most people.

I regret getting the 255 and slapping it on an 8.5" wheel. Getting a 255 though? Nah, I really like them

Lost a bead on my first real trip out. I was only at 15psi (typically go to 10-12psi in similar conditions) in a muddy rut. Thought I was playing it safe since it was the first time I expected to really be spinning tires looking for traction.

Now I am afraid to go under 20psi and missing out on a wholleeee lot of traction because of it.

I bought my ST Maxx (255/80R17) from Discount Tire. Had them price match TireCrawler.com who has them listed at $185 each with free shipping.

I love my 255/85/16 BFG KM2s. I think the size is perfect because they clear much easier than 285s even though they are at least half an inch taller. The front took a little work in the pinch weld, and the rear fit with no work.
