Anyone running 255/85 Cooper st Maxx?

I was all but convinced to go 285 after briefly debating 255-85-16s. They often look too skinny and tucked in on 3rd gens. Then I came across https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/show-off-your-cooper-st-maxx.346956/.

There are a lot of really good looking 255s on there. They don't look too skinny or too tucked in. I'm trying to figure out why a lot of the pictures of 255's on 3rd gen 4runners often don't look as good? I'm honestly a little bit surprised, I would have thought it would be the other way around since the earlier tacoma's/4runner have a narrower look and tires look bigger on them. Is it because I'm looking at other brand 255 tires and they don't look as wide? Is it because of the body style differences? Is it because you have to have a certain backspacing for them to look appropriate?

Anyways, I can't find very many pics of the st Maxx 255s on 3rd gens, specifically with lower backspacing (stick farther out) . Are there any out there?

I think you are correct with the backspacing statement. that can completely change the way tires look.

I rather like the 255/85 on 4runners, im debating whether or not to go that way, or jump to 35" tires....

I've scoured the internet and various forums and just can't find any 3rd gens that look proportionally correct with 255s. I can't figure out why, because even 1st gen tacos can look well done with 255's and 4" BS. Below are some examples...

And most of the newer generation tacomas work great with 255.

Meanwhile, to get the same look and stance on a 3rd gen 4runner, I feel like you need 285/75, also with 4" backspacing. Here's a couple as an example.

So does this mean the 4runners are ~1.5" wider? Or maybe the full body makes them look visually heavier?

I'd be curious to see what a 255 with 4"bs and wheel spacers look like on a 4runner, but I believe I'll go with the 285.

Feel free to say you don't like, but I ran 255-85 in Toyo MT for years and loved the look and how they behaved. Had a lot of compliments on the narrow tire and how it looked. Look in my build (in my signature for pics).

Yeah i looked up the width differences and there is nearly an inch difference between the limited flare width and the widest 1st gen Tacoma crew cab, an even bigger difference for the other tacos.

I'm unsure if the axle width is the same or not, which could make a difference as well.

Yeah that does look good. I'm thinking the limited flair are making a big difference on how well they work or not.

Had to cut the last msg short, I was getting on a plane. Older pics shown them without wheel spacers. The recent ones with 1 1/4" spacers. One thing I did notice was with it being lifted, it road day and night better with spacers on. That extra 2 1/2" inches makes a world of difference (yeah, insert "that's what she said, jokes here....). Not sure if it was exaggerated with the narrower tires or not, but I loved how it was drove with spacers on it.

Yeah that does look really good, proportions look spot on. You don't have flares though, I'm imagining that will make a difference as well (ive got the limited style ones on the '01 SR5). What was the backspacing on the wheels you used with the spacers?

I think you're right, the flares could make it look a bit off. Those wheels are the older Pro Comp Wheels with a 4" Backspace (I hear the new version is 4 1/2").

But on the other hand, I did get a bit of over spray on the side of my truck from my tires after the wheel spacers. Having flares would eliminate that, how wide are the flares? I'll see if can dig up good side pics to show you just how much they stuck out.

I don't like tires sticking out past the flares because then it gives it a bro-dozer look and you're just throwing stuff all over your truck and cars behind you.

Yeah I agree with you there. It can definitely be over done.
