Anyone running the Cooper AT3-XLT tires yet?

Anyone else have any experience to share? I’m looking at 285/75-17s on my GX460 build and there really aren’t that many exciting options in that size.

Appreciate all the input. It seems like a great tire. I do worry about mud conditions as no one has reported mud or slick off road grip. I don’t expect MT performance but is the comfort a huge trade off for performance?

I've had these tires in 285/70R17 for about 18 months now and they are probably the best all-around AT tire I've ever used. At 25k miles in, I'm at 11/32" all around and road manners are still very good. I figure I'll hit about 60k before they have to be replaced. Wet pavement traction is still very good. They do have a slight hum to them now, but it's really only noticeable in the 25-40 mph range before wind noise really picks up. I've got a 1 year old now and that has really cut into my trail time, so almost all of my off-road time on these tires has just been FSRs on the way to campsites. I did go through a couple of really muddy spots on a trail last year, no problems whatsoever, but it was only maybe a 100 ft section that was dicey. I have had it out in the snow several times and I found them to be comparable to the KO2s they replaced - zero problems when aired down.

I have to say, the only con to these tires is the tread design is just kind of boring. I will probably get tired of the tires before they wear out. I wish I had gotten them in 285/75R17.

Late to the party here, but might I suggest the Open Ranges from Les Schwab (If you have Les Schwab in your area...)? I just got some 265/70/17's in January and took a ski trip from Seattle to Jackson Hole and back, with some excursions up Teton Pass in the mix. 2020 SR5. I was very impressed. Quiet and smooth on the Montana 80 mph highways and like glue on snowy roads and snow-wheeling in 10 inches on logging roads. 20 mpg in H2 and a slight drop in H4. As usual, YMMV.

Thanks. I’ve used both tires AT and MT tires. Modern MT tires have finally come around to meet expectations of drivers who demand good on-road compliance and performance. My Falken MT01s were insanely good and I’d buy them again if I could find them in the 285/75 flare. They’re an excellent example of a tire company understanding that people just don’t live on the trail as much as they’d love to.

The reviews on this tire seem good but I’ve also seen Jeeps struggle where they shouldn’t due to this tire.

I feel your pain on the lack of selection in 285/75. Have you looked at the Toyo A/T3? I haven't run them but they seem to be getting good reviews.

In AT 285/75 I think the only ones I would consider are Cooper St Maxx, Toyo A/T3, Cooper AT3 XLT and MAYBE the BFG KO2. Probably best two all round tires are the Toyo A/T3 and Cooper AT3 XLT. ST Maxx is a great tire but more of an AT/MT cross so it sacrifices some road manners for durability. The BFG's lack in wet/snow performance IMHO.

Thanks to you and all for sharing your thoughts and experiences. I do agree the look is a little boring and that will probably bother me after a while too, as ridiculous as it may sound.

I’m really leaning towards maybe trying out the Nitto trail grappler MT. I don’t necessarily NEED an MT. It having used both, the MT really rises a level above the AT when you’re off road. I’m still entirely undecided.

Yeah I looked at the 285/75 and the 305/70 options and they're all the same except fewer in 305. I had a much more difficult time fitting the 305's vs 285's. I run the St Maxx now (20,000 miles) and they're a fantastic tire that wears really well but they definitely lean towards off road use. As far as the tracking goes it's definitely a factor to consider. Although I just recently started using an off road shop that actually knows how to dial in wheel balance and alignment and keeps notes on where you had it last. They were able to mitigate the tracking significantly and get the ride nice and smooth.

My next tire will be an MT as this vehicle will no longer be our primary road trip vehicle by the time I'm ready for another set of tires. Either Cooper STT Pro in 295/70R17 or BFG KM3 in 285/75R17. I'm leaning toward the KM3s, since I don't think I need a wider tire.

Hummm... looks a lot like the Cooper AT3 LT I got now, just with more sidewall tread. Cool. I’d totally buy but they just don’t come in my current size 235/80/17. The ST max does, and it’s a heckuva tire, but I’m not willing to take an 8lb/tire penalty. Here’s hoping they expand the XLT lineup with that one size in the next several years...

Ive been quite happy with my 285/65/18 XLTs over the last 1.5 years. This year I bought a dedicated snow tire, but the previous year they did fine for only being MS. (Some sizes are snowflake while others arent, 285/65/18 arent)
Way quieter and better tread wear than my previous duratracs, and havent noticed any major shortcomings on trails.

For others to keep in mind, the last generation AT3 is significantly different... and cant rteally compare. Seems like there are a ton of negative feedback on that model.

I got about 50k out of the first set of Cooper AT3s (275, C), and have had the newer version (AT3 LT, 275, E) on my '16 for about 10k now. So far all eight tires have balanced well, worn well, have great traction in the rain, and do great off-road. This newer 'LT' version rides a bit smoother, and holds fewer rocks in the treads. I live in CO, and the old version would hold 20-30 small rocks (total over 4 tires) all the way back home via I-70. With this newer version, I might have 1-2 per tire.

Such a great tire, I'll probably never look for another tire, and would far prefer better on-road rain traction to 60-70k wear.

I'm loving my XLT 285/70-17's as well. 800 miles in baja and ZERO chunking or obvious wear.

Cooper came out with a new more aggressive "hybrid" tire recently, so it'll be tempting to try in a couple years when these wear out.

STT Maxx feedback

So, for what it is worth, I have been running the Cooper Discover ST Maxx, LT265/70R17, E rated, for 35k miles. The road noise was tolerable, but getting anyoing despite proper rotations. I came from BFG AT KO2, C rating with scary wet performance, and a slice in the side wall (hence the upgrade to E rating).

The KO2 is plain scary and would never recommend it. Currently looking at the Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT. I wish they would release a more agressive looking side wall in the stock size.

Eh, I'm happy with a true AT tire with good performance (esp. in rain!) looking a bit less 'off-roady' in the sidewall; all the grocery-getters sporting KO2s around here just look stupid.
