Anyone running the Cooper AT3-XLT tires yet?

cooper tires

That is a good looking tire. I did email the company and ask them to look in to making the at3 xlt in a 275/70/17 C load range. that is the perfect size for the 4runners and tacoma's and only Falken makes this size in an agressive AT tire. I will post any response that I get from cooper.

I think the AT3 LT is pretty good looking, and even though ts an E load tire its weighs like 5 LBS liter then the Falken's.

32.8 I would assume you have a lift?

I think you have just convinced me to go with the XLT's

I am thinking the 256/60-20 for an OD of 32.5 ( my limited will be lifted

Yes, I have a 2.25-2.5" lift on my 4Runner. There is a tiny amount of rubbing on the mud flaps, but that's an easy fix if I wanted to do something about it.

Are these Mountain Snowflake rated? Cooper doesn’t advertise it for some reason but I read somewhere else that they are.

I’m also hearing great reviews from a comfort standpoint for a load range E, which is overkill for our rigs. Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I’ve seen nothing but positive reviews on everything else that matters, which mean off road prowess.

I think the AT3 4S is the only one that's 3 peak rated. I'm running those and very, very happy. Not as aggressive looking as the XLT or LT, though.

Thanks! I did read that those were. How are they off road?

I've really only had them in loose sand so far and they did great aired down to 18psi. I hope to get them on more terrain this summer.

My experience with the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S was not so good. I tried them for 2000 miles over 27 days but could not get over the vibration they created and I sensed in my hands and seat. Not the road noise, that was not a problem, they were quiet. They were balanced properly. But the vibration on pavement, due to the tread lug spacing I presume. At all speeds.
They look great and performed well on the dirt roads I took them on. I think they would work well for many people. But my OCD was on high alert and it bugged me.

So I took them back to America’s Tire (30 day trial period), paid more money and got Michelin LTX AT2 tires. In 265/70/17.
It’s been over 3000 miles and so far I like them a lot better on the road and dirt. They look good too.

I got in touch with a guy at Cooper and he said no current plans for a C load but he did say that could change. I really want that 275/70R17 but not sure I want to go with the current E load.

Looks like they don't make this tire in the stock size 265/70R/17. Can only find the 285/70R/17. Will the 285 fit without rubbing?

They have variations of the AT3 in various sizes and models. There's the AT3-4S, LT, and XLT. Think of it as mild, medium, and hardcore. You can get stock size in 4S or LT versions. I had the 285/70/17 XLT's with a 2.5" lift, 4+ caster, pushed back and trimmed the fender liner and it still rubbed. Each setup will be different but you should expect to have to do some modification and maybe a BMC to clear it.

Thanks. I ordered the AT3-4S via TireCrawler for delivery at home in Stevensville MT. Saves CA Sales Tax and Tire disposal fee. Free shipping.

assuming that rubbing is at full lock and backing up :)

What spec are your Rims?

I am 3" spacer lift/leveling with After market UCA to maintain geometry; on the XP wheels 20x9+18mm

Being that I am 0.5" taller and depending on wheel specs I should be above the inflection point on the outer most part of the tire and thus clear the mudflaps with out mod at full lock even with a 33 OD tire.

I get it at 3/4 lock turning driver. OEM Trail wheels.

I had pretty much settled on this as my next tire, bu I was having trouble finding whether or not the XLT version of the tire was M+S rated or 3PMSF, so I emailed Cooper. They responded that it depends on tire size, but that 285/70R17 is NOT a "Severe Weather rated tire."

So I guess my hunt for a decent AT that handles snow as well as rain is back on.

Falken Wildpeak AT3W.

I’ve ran those (SL) KO2s (C) and Ridge Grapplers (C) all in 285/70-17. The Falkens far and away are the superior tire for on road manners and adverse weather. Their off road performance has been impressive and only marginally behind the Ridge Grappler, if at all. Pass on the KO2. They failed to impress me in any scenario.

Falken also offers that size in load range C. That wasn’t the case hence my choice for SL. Read up on them. Impressive tire. Cooper missed the mark here not making them mountain snowflake rated. Hard pass for me.

I really kinda hate the way the Falkens look, but I may have to settle for them. I have KO2s now and they are just garbage on wet roads. I heard the same for Ridge Grapplers too. We get too much rain in the winter to not have a decent wet weather tire and I spend too much time in the mountains in the snow to not have a tire with the M+S or 3PMSF.

Just an FYI, the AT3 XLT has passed 3PMSF (severe service rating or "snowflake rating") in a number of sizes. However due to the nature of the conditions when testing, they haven't been able to certify all sizes yet. Because of that, they haven't all been branded with the logo. But the tire, the design, and the compounds have passed the test already, so it's effectively a snowflake rated tire. That's straight from Cooper as I am performing a long term wear test for them on these tires.

The RGs were just awful in the snow. The only time I’ve ever slid and almost crashed were on the RGs. I also saw a video of a 4R trying to climb a modest hill off road, but snow covered. It couldn’t make the climb which was pathetic. It’s all because of the tire.

While the Falkens don’t look impressive in pics for some reason, they really do look better in person. I catch people looking at them quite frequently. I think it’s a great looking tire, though I do give the sidewall look nod to the KO2. Performance, however, negates any lost points on looks (which is minimal and highly subjective). Trust me, having ran all of them, there’s no settling with the Falkens. They are an awesome tire in everything I’ve thrown at them (including mud).

Very interesting. Weight, contact patch, other issues also play a role, which is why some sizes receive the rating while others don’t. I’m sure they’re a good tire, but unless they’ve independently passed and have received the go-ahead for branding a specific size I’m buying, then it’s a hard pass. In theory it should pass but it never may for various reasons.

Sounds good to me, no argument here. I know here in CA there is no specific requirement for 3PMSF ratings on tires in the snow, only M+S. Not sure if the same holds true for IL. I've been on both, and don't notice a big difference between M+S and 3PMSF. Unless you're chained, studded, or are on dedicated winter tires it's more subjective and up to personal experience in my opinion. Good luck with the tire hunt!
