Anyone tell me what is supposed to go here?

So I have a 93 4runner 3.0 5spd, it has an exhaust leak under the hood, I started to poke around and see if I could find it. And saw this, I have no idea whats supposed to go here, still did not find the leak, one of those you hear but can't pinpoint, but this concerns me. Is it something I should worry about? Best I can tell no effect, but not sure. It has a miss and seems to run a bit rich, but I haven't given it a tune up yet..

anyway what the heck is this? Part of the egr system? and what goes on that hole? A tube? A sensor?

Ah, I see, is this important? Effect running? maybe causing it run rich?

i surprised your check engine light isnt on. i wanna say that sensor tells the computer that the exhaust gases is at operating temp so that it can operate the EGR valve as needed to help reduce combustion temperature which in turns reduces NoX

Well when you said egr temp sensor I was a bit surprised my CEL not on too. Only thing I've noticed is after the 4runner is warmed up, if you shut it off its hard to start, or won't want to idle right. I barely notice it cause I start it, drive to work, shut it off. Same to go home. I just stopped off at the store the other day and noticed this.
