Anyone use these on their 3rd gen?

Been having a look into getting more rear travel (for shit's n' gigs if I ever long travel the front) and I cam accross Metal Tech coils and custom Icon shocks. I know they are "made for" 4th gen 4runners and FJ Cruisers but does anyone see why they wouldn't work in one of our trucks? They seem like a fairly inexpensive way to grab a lot more travel out of the rear without needing to fab up shock buckets outside of the frame.

Thoughts?

It's not hard to get more travel out of the rear. Even the simple and proven LC lift is long travel. About 3" longer than stock I believe.

I have the LC right now and love it. Just hypothesizing how to get even more (I.e 10-12" stroke length shock instead of 8"). The ones linked pull like 11 and at $167 a shock it seems like a pretty good deal to get that length and not fab up new shock buckets when paired with those LT coils.
 
Bilstein 5100s 33-187174 get 9.59 inches of travel for ~$154 a pair
They pair well with lc coils

My brother runs those on his 4th Gen. Nothing special. Pretty much same as toytec superflex.

According to wheeler's, the extended length is 23.5 and compressed is 14.9, so only 8.6" travel. Should be about the same travel as the factory Tokico 80 series shock.

I too am looking for something an inch or two longer than the Tokico's for my 8-wraps. Anyone run an OME shock for the rear of an 80? should be part # 60020, which is 24.6 extended and also 14.9 compressed, which is 9.7" travel

Thoughts: The bodies of those shocks are LONG. Very, very long. If you go and try to throw them in the factory mounting position you're going to run into all sort of issues, like bottoming out the shock well before you're even close to the bump stops.
[MENTION=34852]crazydubman[/MENTION] was able to use a 4th gen extended travel SAW shock by utilizing fancy bump stops, and limit straps. Those shocks, however, are 3.5" shorter than the MT Icon's you've linked.
[MENTION=74071]Brilliant[/MENTION] and another guy I know locally run the Icon 4th gen rear shocks, but they've both outboarded their shock mounts.

The springs would likely work and I'd really appreciate you purchasing them so I can see how much lift you get. I love my OME 861s (which APPARENTLY are very similar with respect to free length and rating) but I'd love if my 4runner was just a hair shorter.

Those springs have literally nothing in common with the 4th gen superflex. Well, other than being black and fitting in a 4th gen.

Those springs have literally nothing in common with the 4th gen superflex. Well, other than being black and fitting in a 4th gen.

They act and perform pretty much like my LC coils. I dont see how they are not similar.

How tall do the 861's make your truck? I was also looking at those when I starting thinking about outboarding my shocks

I use the 2.5 RR ones. I wanted to get maximum bump so I out boarded them. You'll have no bump unless you do the same with the ET 4runner shocks.

LC coils are even LESS similar to these. I don't want to litter this dude's thread with info which is irrelevant to his question, but just know that your LC coils are without a doubt COMPLETELY different than these metal tech springs, and a little less different, but still WAY different than the 4th gen superflex springs.

My 4Runner is a bad example since I have a stupid amount of weight over my rear axle... That said, I am at just a hair under 24.5" (.5" of that is body lift) with over 400lbs of EXTRA weight (extra meaning more than stock) hanging off the back bumper, sitting in the cargo area, and the roof. With the spring rate of the 861's I should be "sagging" a bit under 2" so I think it'd be safe to say that without 400lbs of extra crap, you'd be looking at close to 26" hub to fender.

In a perfect world I'd lower the rear of my 4Runner 1 inch, and the front about 1/2". Then I'd be at 23.5" in the rear, and 22.5" in the front (again, .5" of those numbers being the body lift).

I just realized that I left the dimensions of those metal tech/icon shocks out of my post. They're big.

17" compressed, 28.5" extended. Big. Really big.

So with extended bumps and brake line, Theoretically I can get a solid amount more of downtravel than with my current 5100's?
