Anyone with Magnaflow 15781 exhaust?

I was browsing exhaust options since my tailpipe section rusted off of the muffler, so I figure it’s a good time to upgrade. I have the DT headers, so it should sound nice with a good aftermarket system. I like the #15781 because it’s stainless, and has the dual pipes. I wish there was an aftermarket that has separate pipes on each side, but since there isn’t, this is the next best thing as long as it isn’t a massive drone generator. Just as an aside, I’m also considering the Gibson stainless, as well as the TRD dual setup (most expensive). My only reticence with the Gibson is that the fit left a lot to be desired on my v8 Explorer, and it rusted very quickly. After 1 year, it looked like it could have been 5-10 years old, which is why I’d only get stainless at this point for any aftermarket exhaust.

borla muffler dont drone as much as the others, smaller the muffler the louder it is. maybe my dual isnt loud since they come with a resonator before the muffler. you can just but a muffler with a single in and dual out, or do dual in and dual out. do you want some rumble or more tone?

Is yours custom with a Borla muffler, or is it the dual setup they don’t make anymore? As far as sound goes, I’d like something to accent the headers and make it sound like a v8, but not looking to be obnoxious like a straight pipe Harley, if that makes sense.

It's the dual setup that borla don't make anymore.
It's sounds more tamed to me. I went through a couple of setups. Also mines a v6. But the system I brought from was a V8.
If you want to save money now. Choose a muffler only. Don't need the whole pipe work, unless you want them to route the end to the side like a 3rd gen. Borla and magnaflow are good mufflers. If you need a bigger tone a flowmaster super44 will give you that sound. Also the Cherry bomb vortex.

If the exhaust shop is cool, ask them if you can try both the borla and magnaflow out. Center in and offset out. 2.5 inch for inlet and outlet.

I went with the single stainless steel straight out the back. As soon as i install in ill let you know. I also have a v8

I may try to source a single in, dual out muffler and have some tailpipes custom bent. Seems like it would be cheaper than trying to locate an old Borla, or paying the huge price that is being asked for the TRD dual system. I’ve also read that some didn’t like the drone that the TRD has, so picking the right muffler should help with that as well.

Not to hijack this thread but where were you able to get your headers installed? I've been looking for a place in the Boston area that is willing/able to do the work but so far have not been successful....

all muffler will drone at a certain rpm, smaller the muffler the louder the drone, and also the design. certain mufflers give a certain sound, if you want loud the flowmaster does it. theres a youtube video of a user here that did 2 flows on the v8. it sounds mean.
borla and magnaflow might give a tamer sound. i say try either the magnaflow your looking at, or a borla universal muffler. if you find one on craigslist thats good, dont pay too much for it. also the XSP 4runners have the duals too, the v6 one will bolt right up after you mod the inlet pipe a couple inches shorter.
i got lucky the muffler guy didnt charge me after i gave him a hand with a customer brand new corvette.

I was fortunate in that the headers were already installed when I bought the truck this past fall/winter. They also have the pre-CATs welded in. Unfortunately, I have no idea who did the work as I bought it from a dealer. I assume it was to remedy a cracked manifold problem. Shortly after owning it I developed the CEL p0420 code, and the vsc/trac lights, but haven’t fixed those yet. I’ve looked for leaks but so far haven’t found any, so maybe one of the cats is bad, not sure. At this point, I’ll probably just buy the URD simulator and be done with it, because not only would replacing those welded in CATs be cost prohibitive, but finding someone to do it is nearly impossible as you’ve found!

Thanks. Yeah, I think I’m over the really loud Flowmaster stuff like I used to run on my old 5.0 Mustangs, so the slightly quieter, but still nice sounding Magnaflow and Borla type is what I’m leaning towards. As I mentioned, I installed a Gibson on my previous 5.0 Explorer, and loved the sound, but the fit was terrible, and it rusted completely in about a year! Granted it was the “aluminized” version, but still, most stock systems last WAY longer than that, especially considering I paid like $350ish for it! I wasn’t planning to keep it for many more years, which was why I didn’t spend the extra for stainless, but for my 4Runner, I will definitely go stainless, regardless of brand.

Thanks, I’ll have to go through that thread again. I think I browsed that when I first bought the truck, but at the time thought I probably wouldn’t drop the coin JUST for sound, and would wait until there was an excuse to replace it. I just didn’t think it would break so soon, because it has very little rust! It literally ONLY rusted where the connections to the muffler are, and fortunately broke at the rear of the muffler so it’s still driveable until I find a good replacement.

ill let you know when i install it, maybe we can meet up so you get a better idea.

That would be awesome, thanks! We travel all over MA and CT for business, so that may work well.

i finally installed my gibson exhaust, took longer to get to me then expected. Its not crazy loud but it sounds nice with the v8. It was an easy install. I did have to buy a longer rubber hanger for the back from amazon because the exhaust tip was up against my bumper. Its also just touching the tow hitch underneath which i think is causing rattling when i come to a stop, so ill have to do something about that.

Yeah, exhaust rattles can drive you mad. I had a Gibson on my Explorer that had a slightly incorrect bend angle in the rear, and would rub on the passenger side shock (which was a load leveler with coil). No matter what I did, I could not get enough clearance to prevent the rub. I even ended up denting the area just to keep it from wearing the parts! Glad you like the sound though!

I ended up scoring a new in box TRD stainless dual exhaust for mine! Just installed it yesterday as a matter of fact and love it so far. Fit was flawless, and so far I love the sound. Haven’t had a chance to drive it a lot yet though, but will put it through it’s paces today!

i want to see some pics of the system, i might decide if i want to cut off the resonator to make it more louder.

Im planning on buying this system in the next couple of months. It looks like a good setup.
