Anything better than Cooper Discoverer for snow/noise?

Hi all, ready to pull the trigger on a set of tires and searches & posted here and it seems that the Cooper Discoverer AT3's are in the lead. Main concerns are snow & road noise followed by tread life. Others that were brought up were Micheline LTX, but for every good response there are two that say "not great in snow", Firestone Destination, Bridgestone Revo II's (not too much info), & BFG A/T's, but with the BFG's came opinions of beeing on the louder side. I am coming out of a set of Geolandars, they were pretty good, but in the snow they seemed they needed to warm up a bit before they started to grip & on the last 1/3 of their life they got a little noisy. Thanks guys/gals any info would be great!

Nope. The BFG A/T are really quiet actually.

I ran them for years then I switched over to General Grabber AT2 which is very similar.

I'm currently running 33s and have no noticeable road noise.

Recently put AT3's on my Tundra and ATP's on the 4runner. ATP's come from Discounttiredirect. I actually like the ATP's better. Quieter, don't throw rocks as bad and are 1/2 the price.

if you are complaining about road noise, then you probably need to sell your vehicle and buy something else...

hello, this is a suv/struck(still on a actual frame), its technology is almost 20years old, so that means the sound deadening is out dated, and to be quite honest its probably lost some of its ability to do so in its 15 years of life and being on the road ect... so if your gonna start complaining about "too much road noise" then i dont think this is the vehicle for you. not only that, but with the tires you have mentioned, the bigger factor in road noise will be the road surface itself, not the tires. the type of roads and the condition of the road will have a bigger impact on the noise than the differences between the tires will -its not like you are talking about MT tires

Wrong, first I posted this in the wrong forum, sorry, mine is actually a gen4 and is very quiet, very quite, so much so, when the tires start wearing you will notice. This is my 2nd 4Runner and 5th SUV also had 4 p/u trucks and various sedans & sports cars.

i too have had tires that get louder as they wear, all tires do this, even on sedans... i still think that if tire/road noise is a concern for you, you should look into some dynomat or other like type of material for sound deadening. like i stated in my first post, the road surface will have more of an affect than the tires them selves, and that is fact.

Agreed I've had BFG ATs; great traction but a bit more noise on the freeway. I next switched to BFG Rugged Terrain which is a compromise; a little quieter than the ATs but still a fairly aggressive look.
Unfortunately I cannot speak to how they will do in the snow. Yes, we do get snow occasionally in Texas but sometimes you have to wait a couple years... Ha!

Cool, it's not it's a loud thing, it's more of a "let me get the quiter tires" thing so it doesn't become a lound thing. :thumb:

GOODYEAR WRANGLER DURATRAC's

I have BFG's on both my other SUV's one being an explorer and one a Yukon XL 2500 and the DuraTrac is just as quiet. I hear no tire noise unless I roll my window down.

Revo 2's do great in the snow and are not noisy on the road, they stopped making them for a little over a year and the new ones are made here in the USA while the older models were made in Japan. I only have experience with the older Japanese ones but I have had two sets, one was 265/70/16 and my current ones are 265/70/17 both are P rated sets so no rock crawling and the noise level might be super different once you step up to an LT
I got about 45k miles out of the first set and will probably get the same usage on my current ones. The rubber compound is super soft and they grip really well on pavement, wet weather handling is good but not great especially as they begin to get down to 50% tread. They grip like duct tape in the snow but I am mainly referring to driving on snow covered pavement not any deep driving in the woods snow.
Have you thought about getting the Falken wildpeaks? They have some really good reviews.

I see a lot of bald duratracs around town and it could just be that they are great tires so people hold on to them even when the tread is low, but it makes me wonder how quickly the shed their coat.

Can't really compare as of yet. Only had them since April. But from then they still look new.
As far as the BFG's are concerned they wear like iron. Have two on the explorer that have an easy 60k on them.

Nice I am thinking of going that direction for my next set. Tried and True.

My AT3s have about 33K miles and have about 1/2 tread left. They are quiet, smooth, great off road (handle sharp rocks with no problems), and great on wet roads and in snow (what little we get around here - 2 or 3 6-8" snows a year).

I have run both BFG A/Ts and Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs and I think the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs are quieter. This will be my second winter on them and I like them more than BFG's and I was a diehard BFG guy. All the reviews I read on the Duratracs convinced me to get them. Both are great tires, just think the Duratracs are quieter. Really don't know much about the Coopers.

I'm going to throw a new contender in the ring...TOYO Open Country AT II! These tires kick ass in every category...except deep mud. As always...TOYO tires come with a 500 mile "trial" warranty. If you think they suck in the first 500 miles, take them back and get your money back...no questions asked. On top of that, they come with a 60,000 mile tread warranty (metric).

They are so quite...you'll forget you even have all terrain tires on. I've had them on for about 10,000 miles with good wear, and as quite as the day I installed them...but I do rotate every oil change. I have not had them on ice yet...but light mud and snow was a lot of fun!!

I dont think any AT will wear as fast as a BFG AT.

Severe snow rated, and pretty quiet.

Maybe my Open Country AT's spoiled me, but I think my Duratracs are quite loud. Obviously not as loud as a mud terrain, but I can hear them at any speed over 30mph. I am excited to try them out in the snow though.

For what it is worth.... here is my 2 cents....


BFG is 20 year old out dated technology its a great tire that does " good" at most things but not great at any one thing....... they are great tires and well loved, with that being said I honnestly do not think they are that great, and I think they really are lacking in the snow. Just look at the tread deisgn thye pack up WAY to easy. I think the price tag people ask for them is because you are buying the name and the rep.....


I HIGHLY suggest a set of Hankook Danapro ATM's I have a set of the Ten ply's on my tacoma and they do Awesome..... Awesome in the snow. Great road manners and I dont feel like noise is a problem at all. Compared to the price of the BFG, it was a no brainer for me, not to mention they are Highly reviewed for snow usage...... in terms of how long do they last....

I rotate every five thousand miles and have just a little over 30 k on mine now. they are still just above the wear line at the one third mark what I mean is they still have roughly 2/3 tread left. I fully expect to get another 30 k out of them before replacement.
mind you I have a light truck ( taco regular cab) and its a ten ply and I constantly check tires pressure, rotate aline as needed. a lot of those are highway miles racked up in the last year.

I lived intill recently 3 miles off the cloest paved road and drove through 18 inches of heavy northwest snow no problem. on the road that has not seen a plow in a few hours and is glazed up and packed I almost never ran 4x4 because these tires were that good...../


Check them out and read the reviews before you buy..... They have out preformed ANY cooper tire I have ever run unless we are talking deep mud
