Approaching 200k - the good, the bad and the ugly:

The T4R V8 Limited is the most reliable vehicle I ever owned, however, had I known a few things ahead, I could have avoided some troubles. Now, with 200k approaching, let me share some experiences:

1) brake calipers: first thing I had to change were brake calipers, due to stuck brake cylinders. I had just purchased the T4R and did not expect that the calipers would be an issue on the 4th gen. Otherwise I would have just serviced the brake cylinders instead of running them down and then having to replace calipers, disk and pads.

2) A specific problem of my T4R is the transfer chain in the transfer case (were the low-high gear switch is). I am on my third transfer chain! Curiously, the electric mechanism for shifting btw low and high is fine - apparently many others have problems with that. Mine needs a bit of care, cleaning and fresh gear oil from time to time. But the chain got stretched twice and started to jump sprockets. Replacing the chain is straight forward but you need a mechanic who knows what to look for.

3) A real freak incident was when a spark plug got loose in the V8 engine while I was on a 800m trip! I had never experienced this or had read about this before, but these little buggers DO get loose and need to be tightened every now and then! I was on a long distance trip and ruined the thread of one of the spark plugs. Could have ruined the entire engine if metallic debris had been spread around, but I was lucky. Just a few hours of work to cut a new thread and put in a part for the ruined thread, then cleaning out the old engine oil and filling fresh one. That did the trick.

4) My rear window exploded into a thousand pieces on one cold winter morning in 2016. I had the window heating on and lowered the glass in the back at the same time! DON'T DO IT! The stress on the glass can get too high. Got it replaced.

If someone had told me ahead about these issues, I could have saved a penny or two, but mostly a lot of nerves and time! So be advised!

Im just hitting 230k on my 03' and it runs great. (Knock on wood). I just have a bit of a rust problem, but a nice summer day and some good attention to the rust spots should fix it up. I'm gonna buy some paint from an online supplier (Maybe automotivetouchup.com?). When I install my lift I'll also put a good coating of rustoleum on the rust spots below the car.

Jan777, did you ever have mismatched tires on your truck? My son's Ranger T-case did not last long with the different sized tires the former owner put on it. I always replace all as a set. Just a thought.

That's a problem with the V8. No option as rear wheel drive only.

I have a v6. I use 2H all the time. 4H when needed. Saves me from transfer case wear and tear. I can even replace only 2 tires.

RockSolid Toys has a conversion kit to go to a FJ transfer case and get 2wd back, along with 2wd low range on the V8. Kit runs around $2300 plus your labor or wherever you take it for the install.

No option from the factory but there is an option for it with some $ and some work. Cheaper or about the same as having the servo crap rebuilt.

Thanks for the feedback. No, I always changed all 4 tires, all the same size and I keep to stock size. What might have caused the chain to stretch, is probably a leak in the oil seal of the transfer case.

I drive long distance, high speeds (400-600 miles each way at a more or less constant speed of 90-100 mph), so that high speed combined with a dry transfer case probably killed the chain twice. Still good engineering: the sprockets and all the mechanical parts remain without any damage. The chain itself is easy to replace.

We drive rather fast in Europe and I have to cross three countries (and six border controls :()when I go from my work place to my home.

Nice modification for the V8, but quiet pricy! And I also cannot get these parts anywhere in Europe. The shipping costs from the U.S. to Europe + tax + customs = kills it!

Just last week I wanted to order new headlights from CARID - items were about 240USD and the quote for shipping ran to 400USD - no thanks, that does not work for me!
