What changed from 98 to 99 that I can't use this on my runner ?

My brother has a K&N in his 98, you can go that route if the Toytec one isn't deemed compatible.

That is what I planned on doing, but I stumbled apon this and it's a little cheaper so I just had to ask

Ha..I didn't even know Toytec came up with one til you posted it.

Dont do it!!! Save your money. I put on a K&N CAI a few years back and it served no benefit on the 3.4 motor. I took it off a few days later. The only thing it was, was loud. They claim 7-8hp but thats at 5500-6000 rpms. I dont know about you, but I have never had my 4runner redlined.

rc4r you should do it! i think its well worth it, not only the sound but i could tell a pretty good difference when stepping on it, way more throaty sound and response, i doubt you would regret it!

yeah i would stray away from any open intake like that, I think they prob work but not as good as it can. You can get an inclosed intake for the same price usually. like AFE (i think), TRD, Airaid and Volant. these guys make intakes that look exaxtly like whats on the high performance cars.

But then again Tmaxx has the K&N on his and hasn't had any problems. Another one of my buddies has the K&N on his tacoma too and he said he has only had a few problems from over oiling it. so i dont know go with what you want.

Go with K&N in the stock airbox with the deckplate mod. It will save you about $200.

Idk I'm trying to juice out as much hp as possible. I read that deckplate will decrease mpg.

i'm building a CAI for my 4runner....my paper filter is crap and another paper one is less than i'm building the CAI for. i bought a 3" conical K&N for 17 bux new on amazon, used some 3" pipe i had already, and bought 1/2 tube from home depot for the vac lines for $5. my filter just came in tonight...i will put it all together in the morning. i have $17 in the filter. a few dollars in metal which i already had, and the silicone couplers i had laying around already. here's a pic of part of it...i will adapt the MAF to the pipe...i do have a welder which makes projects like this easy.

wow i seem to be saying the same stuff in the other forums lol! but i dont think they have a snorkel kit for the 4runner yet just the FJ.

I hate that im the only one that seems to have the volant intake here but honestly i love mine the sound in my opinion is much better then the K&N and it looks clean under the hood. I just gotta find me a good dyno and see if i can make others interested

What mix of highway and city is that?

idk, maybe 60-40 highway. maybe 50-50.

The one thing I found was I hate the sound the engine makes with both mods. It sounds like I am in a f'ing ricer. I have stock exhaust so I'm sure that aftermarket exhaust would make it sound more throaty. I drive a diesel daily so I may be jaded on what a loud truck should sound like.

IMO if a truck/SUV doesnt have a deep, throaty sound, then it should be silent. If you have both those mods and stock exhaust and think it sound good, more power to you. I am embarrassed when I have to hit the gas and the engine whines.

That being said I may have driven noticeably slower so my engine would be silent. I definitely noticed a difference in throttle response. Night&day to be honest. I told myself if I'm not getting substantially better gas mileage I'm putting the deckplate and silencer back on bc it sounds really gay to me.

I'm keeping the current set-up since my MPG went up. I also went to Bridgeport this weekend and noticed the throttle response helped while on the trails.
