ARB Single Cylinder Compressor - CKMA12 Review

Here's a first hand review of the single cylinder CKMA12 ARB compressor after substantial use over the past week. I lost track of the numbe rof times I aired down and back up during this week long adventure. I've included it in the General Discussions section of the forum for all generation 4Runners.

Some Background Thoughts on my Pre-purchasing Decision

Prior to purchasing I had considered
  • Other brands
  • The portable version of the CKMA12
  • The more expensive twin cylinder CKMTA12

I also took the following into consideration:
  • My needs
  • Available installation space if I went with a permanent mount
  • Cargo space used if I went with a portable compressor/tank
  • Possible water crossings and submersion
  • Budget

I have a 2001 4Runner with ample room in the right rear cargo compartment storage space. In all fifteen years of ownership, I've rarely used that space. I also have headers so my engine compartment would have the additional heat from the exhaust. I had to eliminate the engine bay as an installation option.

As for my needs I only plan on using it to air up after airing down and perhaps for lockers some day should I decide to add lockers. As for cost, I just couldn't justify $800 for a compressor, even with the group buy.

I decided on ARB because it's a proven name in the industry and parts are a plenty should anything happen to it later on. I narrowed it down to this model because of the size, cost and it meets my needs perfectly.

Here are the Raw Stats for this Review
  • Tire size - 285/70R/17 (33") Nitto Grappler Trail
  • Aired down to 18-20psi
  • Aired back up to 35psi
  • Time to air up per tire was around 1 minute and 45/50 seconds
  • Compressor NEVER shut down due to overheating
  • Total time from start to finish (back on the road again) was around 15 minutes.

I kept my "essential tools" bag in the rear cargo compartment next to the compressor for easy access, which included a pair of gloves, ARB deflator and inflator and a spare 40amp fuse. (There were other readily available essentials in the bag not pertaining to the compressor other than two valve stems with valve cores and dust caps)

My review - :thumb3:

For those of you deciding on an air compressor, I hope this first hand review for a basic overland rig running 33's is helpful for you regardless of what generation rig you own.

Of course. Not a problem. Costs were actually pretty minimal for the installation aside from the ARB components. If you wait for Black Friday or the next GB you can get a pretty decent discount. No over-the-counter or Amazon discounts that I'm aware of.

Here's the List
  • ARB 171302 Inflation Accessory Kit - $38
  • ARB ARB505 E-Z Deflator - $40
  • ARB ARB605 Blue Inflator with Gauge and Braided Hose - $27
  • ARB CKMA12 Air Compressor - $267

Total cost to get yourself up and running with an ARB setup, minus typical electrical supplies is - $372

Installation time - I never rush through anything. I gave myself two days to complete the job. Took about a day and half.

Additional items needed if you're going to run your wiring to the front is:
  • 10ga wire for the Compressor Solenoid (25ft) - $18.50 x 2
  • 20ga wire for the pressure switch (25ft) - ?
  • Heat Shrink - ?
  • Heat Shrink Butt Connectors - ?
  • Cable Ties (AKA - Zip Ties) - ?
  • Cable Tie Mounts - ?
  • Rubber grommets if you're running your wiring through anything. - Prevents chafing and ultimately a short or a fire.

Any item with a question mark ( ? ) indicates I already have most of the items in my garage.

I use Ancor products from West Marine for most of my wiring, connectors, splices etc. Quality product. If there's anything I pay particular attention to it's my wiring and my electrical system.

Here's a link to my install from the 3rd gen section - ARB Installation

Now that I have time, I'll add this along with a few more pics of the installation in my build.

Again, hope this helps. I think the most important info is the inflation time and the fact that it never shut down due to overheating.
