ARB Skid Plates

My ARB's are on the FedEx truck to be delivered in the morning :guitar3:

I am not sure I will install them tomorrow or not though. I may wait until I am back at the in laws to use the lift.
 
Installed them tonight. A couple things I noticed, one of the bolts does not line up. The other five in the front skid, so its not that it is misaligned on the truck. No matter what was done, it would not line up. Another thing is that it rattles on the exhaust. I noticed the sound as soon as I started it up to move it around the garage. I thought that it was something rubbing, but there is nothing anywhere to rub but the exhaust and rear skid. Quality is fantastic aside from these two things. And, as always, pics below.

My front skid looks different than all others I have seen. I am not really sure why.

Rear skid touching exhaust. I will probably take a hammer to this exhaust pipe to stop them from touching. The transfer case skid, you have to beat the hell out of this to get it on.

Do you have KDSS? Cause I think you bought the skids for KDSS. The front skid is different, mine has a little lip, kdss is more straight.
 
A side note, oil changes are going to be a total ***** now. It seems that you will have to take off all skids to take of the front one. I can, hopefully, reach through the front one to take off the filter so I don't have to go through all of that. I believe there was an opening for the drain bolt itself but it was super late so I'm not 100% sure.

They look good Brock. Maybe you can enlarge the hole in the skid for that one bolt to align enough?

Bud certainly has the oil change covered. I have a Fumoto installed right over a hole in the mid skid for easy draining, and the front skid has the access door for the filter. I think I will only need to remove the BBs to change differential and transfer case oils.
 
Mine doesn't rattle from the exhaust, it rattles cause I still haven't pounded out the dents lol. I'll see if mines touching the exhaust.
 
Checked the box and they sent me the KDSS skids. Any reason that I shouldnt run them? I dont want to make them send me new ones if they are fine. Also, having 5 of 6 bolts in the front skid should be plenty shouldnt it? Instructions actually only call for the front and rear bolts but with that one hole misaligned I wasnt comfortable with that.

I'd return it. 5 out of 6 should be fine if you don't hit anything, but if you hit on the side that's misaligned (and you know thats where you'll hit!) and it bends in because there was no bolt supporting it then you could end up with more damage than without the skid there.

And that's why I'd return it for the right one. If you aren't comfortable with it for any reason then every time you hear something hit or scrape the skid you're going to pucker up wondering if that's the hit that messes something up seriously.
 
I am going to drill it out a bit and run a bolt through it. It actually has extra bolt holes that the non KDSS skid doesn't have so I like that, just have to play with it a bit. The exhaust rattling through the floor is the only problem now, but that would be happening regardless because the rear skids are the same for both applications.

Maybe using some washers to space it down from the cross member instead of hammering away at your exhaust would be a better idea eh? :wink:

Also the non kdss maybe a bit different in the rear (although I don't see why they would be) where it's hitting the exhaust so might be worth returning them for the correct ones.

Ya I would say that the BFH fixes tend to be my normal fix, but I am gonna go with the washers on this one LOL.

The KDSS only changes the front skid, but I suppose it could change the angle of the skids behind it. The plus side that I have found with keeping these is that the open space for the KDSS system allows for space to get my arms in there to change the oil filter without removing the skid from what it looks like. ARB said that there is not really a downside to running them on a non-KDSS vehicle. I am going to email TRDparts4u on Monday and ask them how they want to proceed with it.

Do you think I could sneak a Fumoto with a nipple on it under there? That would make it much easier and cleaner I am sure. I hate getting oil everywhere.
 
Installed my skids yesterday and I also had to space the rear skid to clear the exhaust. They ain't Buds but they are a huge improvement over the stock sheet metal. Filter changes are gonna suck...for my brother-in-law that is :wink2:

 
Billy, can you take a pic up to where the oil filter is to show how close the skid is? Also, did you have 6 open bolt holes or 4 for the front skid?

The front skid has 6 mounting holes, 2 in the front 2 that bolt to the support brackets and 2 in the rear. I used the 2 in the support brackets as the rear mounting holes don't meet the frame (see pic) because of my lift, there is at least 1/2 inch of space between the mount and frame but i'm thinking i'll make some spacers and use all six. And yes they all line up perfect.


And a pic of the oil filter, seems to be plenty of room to change it but you will most likely spill oil all over...speaking of which after seeing this pic I need to speak with my bro-in-law about having his monkey change my oil and leave this friggin mess :mad:

Quite the difference from the KDSS front skid. Now I am curious if I should contact TRDparts to ship the other one....
