are 35s really worth it?

Even the v6 on wet roads tend to break loose also.

My main concern is if I could still get all the flex I have with the 35's and no BL.

Uhm, I hate to burst your bubble; but a 275/70R17 is a hair over 32" tall.

I was waiting for someone to point it out, blackworks did.

I am running 275x65x20 Duratracs and even that is only 34.1. PLENTY of trimming - front bumper, body mount chop, rear bumper, a metal subframe inside rear bumper's fender liner..

As for performance, I notice no difference in MPG or power compared to my previous 265x70x17 Duratracs which were P-rated and pretty light. When I went to 20s, I was expecting better on-road manners, but that was not to be. It is still just as "wobbly" or "squishy" as the previous 17s. I think that's just the nature of the AT tread tires.

Drive-train wise, I was already setup for it, didn't have to do anything specifically for the 20s. I have LR UCAs, diff drop, extended sway bar links for the back, body lift, etc.

I LOVE the upsized tires because it fills the wheel wells better and makes for a very good looking stance. After my lift, the old 265x70x17s looked very tiny and mickey mouse like, which I didn't care for. In general, having wheels/tires that 'stuff' the wheel well is a good look for me.

Now, how they do offroad is yet to be determined. I added about 1.5" of ground clearance compared to old tires/wheels, but gave up some flex I'd imagine. Not sure if I gained/lost any offroad prowess, will see.

im planning to go 315/70/17 34.5 when its time. I have plenty of room and trimmed heavily already. I never noticed a difference with the 285s.
 
Here's some pics of the front fender wells and what I've trimmed. You can also see the pinch welds are hammered flat. Sorry, truck is kind of dirty right now. You don't need to trim as much off the front bumper as I did. I know that feeling, working on a rear bumper/tire swing arm and I took everything out on the back side, tire holder mounting bracket and all.
 
Would 35's be recommended on our trucks with high-speed driving over bumps? I'm looking at a 50-50 mix of slow rock crawling and soaking up bumps at speed, would 35's limit my travel? I'm thinking 34's would be a better choice for this; 305-70-17 MT/Rs.

I'm guessing 35s for clearance in the rocks
33s and 34s for lighter-weight, more travel, in the fast terrain
What are your opinions?

I'd be running fiberglass and a 1.5" BL.

Edit: more like 80% street, 10% rocks, 10% high speed :)

I have 35's....on my 4x4 v8 F-250 with 4.56s. Would I get them on a 4runner? No.
Why? Different beast. I make my buddies f-250 Harley Davidson edition V10 with 35's look like a joke! on the street and off. He can out haul me easily, but that's it.

Before & After picture :)

The only issue I have right now is on sharper turns when the vehicle compresses (it nicks the body mount, I have trimmed and hammered it; a bit hesitant to trim it further without welding in support at the moment) and the rear mudflaps rubbing (easily fixed once I get a full metal rear bumper).

I have been thinking of fiberglass fenders in the near future myself. I am still trying to decide how I will do the rear wheel arch to match it. At the very least I may have a fab shop weld and "roll" the fenders like you see on the street rod scene.

What do you guys think the minimum amount of body lift you would need to fit 35's or 315/70r17s = 34.5 ? I plan on upsizing on the next go around once these tires wear down. I know there's going to be some chopping,grinding,hammering and cutting to do which I'm fine with and I can modify my bumper to raise it up 1" so that shouldn't be a big deal to get rid of the huge gap, But my sliders are welded on and I'm wondering how that's going to be with the extra gap between those ? I guess I could always cut/grind them off and re weld but I feel like that's a lot of work to do. Idk I'm confused :confused:

1 to 1.5" would be the lower end of the spectrum. I've debated if 2" would have been a better idea for heavy compression, but I won't know until I start flexing the 4Runner on the trails.

Depends on how much you want to cut. If you tub behind the front tires you could fit them with no body lift and the suspension lift you have. Outside of that I'd recommend a 1.5" or bigger. I have no complaints about my 2.5" except that it made my steering shaft hit my new headers.

FJs got it easy. Most the FJs I've seen wheeling have 35s.:cry2:
