Are all v8 models AWD?

I keep reading conflicting information regarding the v8 model and AWD.

According to these posts all v8 4runners are AWD:

1)Yes, you did and you were comparing EPA estimates, and quoting my response to your prior post that non-vvti are better than vvti.

2)I said the EPA estimates are worse then went on to say all the threads on mpg (I have reviewed many) are all pretty similar from year to year.

3)All 4th Gen V8s are AWD.

4)Now the EPA is a fake Google website?

5) Ask anyone who has owned many versions of the same vehicle. Two identical spec'd cars will get different mileage. Many factors go into this, and it doesn't mean they are broken.

Seriously. You think there is 30 lb/ft torque difference when there is 10, you think the 08 V8 is not awd, and VVTI gets 3mpg better. Did you change out your blinker fluid to see if that increased your mileage? Seriously. People come to this board to get educated. What you've posted is some of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent responses were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this board is now dumber for having listened to it. So within that body of information I've read that 2wd v8 doesnt exist, it exists and I own it, all are AWD and only 4WD features AWD.

Can someone shed light on this for me please? Specifically, does 04 non-vvti 2WD exist or are they AWD?

Yes 2WD V8 4Runners exist. However all 4WD V8 4runners are full time 4WD. There isn't a 2WD mode like the V6 has. The V8's have a center differential that distributes varied amounts of power to the front and rear wheels. You can lock that differential with the push of a button and that splits it 50/50.

Yes 2wd V8 4runners exist. I was responding to another poster that said a family member had a V8 4runner with multi-mode (2wd/4wd). The V8 4runners with 4wd have 4 hi and 4 low, but cannot be put into 2wd like the V6 can.

The 2WD is just that, 2(rear) wheel drive.

The 4WD/AWD is full time 4 wheel drive (or all wheel drive some might say). You can't switch your 4WD V8 into 2WD like you can with a V6. The only options are 4HI and 4LO.

Note: The 4WD vs AWD argument is a whole nother can of worms I am not trying to get into, mostly due to my ignorance on the semantics. Someone may shed more light on specifically what it should be called. All I know is V8 4Runners that can deliver power to every wheel, can only deliver power to every wheel on the car and you can't make it just deliver power to the rear. But they do make 2WD V8 4Runners.

IMO the term AWD is for vehicles that do not have a selectable transfer case and thus no low range. Like Subarus or the Toyota Highlander. The 4runner has fulltime 4WD.

I was under the impression this was the case too, until seeing a few people with 2wd v8's recently.

I own a 2WD V8. RWD only. I am guessing that there is no front differential box or drive shaft which you would need for any type of 4WD/AWD set up. I have only had it 2 weeks and haven't crawled underneath the front end yet.

One of the perks that I’ve gotten with just having a 2runner (rear wheel drive only) is better gas mileage. It get about 1-2mpg better than my friends newer v6 4wd even with the bigger V8 on it!

Still, most people don’t buy a 4runner for better gas mileage. I got a great deal on it and I do love my Limited but there are certainly times when I wish I had that 4wd.
