Are Side Curtain Airbags Roll-Sensing on 4runner?

Hey all,

Are the side curtain airbags on the 4runner roll-sensing?? I don't think that they are on the FJ Cruiser. But they are roll-sensing on my Highlander (no OFF switch).

The reason i bring this up is that i have read a story on the Xterra board where an owner had his roll-sensing airbags open while tilting back and forth. Link: http://thenewx.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=2415&highlight=side+airbags+offroading

The Lexus LX470 and TLC have roll-sensing side curtain airbags, but they have an OFF switch. This is the perfect solution IMHO. I don't care too much about the lack of an OFF switch on the Highlander because i don't plan to off-road with it. Roll-sensing is a plus if you keep your SUV on the road all the time, but it can become a nightmare (financially!) off-road.

Yep... The RSCA button turns off the roll-sensing for those side air bags and curtains. One of the best safety features found on the 4runner. Thankfully in 2008 it is standard (no longer optional).

Wow...very cool to hear!! Toyota is way ahead of other manufacturers in this. 2005-now Mercedes G500s don't have this OFF button for their side curtains.

If I remember correctly, the angle which triggers the RSCA (if not turned off by switch) is thirty degrees.

I also beleive the vehicle needs to be in park in order to turn off the roll sensors. Correct me if I'm wrong....

Don't think so anyway. I tried the other day just to mess around with it. I pushed the button while driving on the highway and nothing. I know I have turned them off before when I first got my 4R so I'm guessing I was in park when I did it. I'll have to double check in my owner's manual when I get a chance.

Ahh...very cool...this makes more sense.

It is indeed a cool feature but I have to confess to forgetting to use it many times when off-roading so it's apparently not overly sensitive or there's a good algorithm at play 'cause no problems so far, and that would be with lots of opportunities.

It defaults to airbags on with engine re-start so that's nice too.

Not to bring this topic back from the dead but just to get a little clarification... So my '03 Limited that's loaded out, including side curtain airbags, should not be affected by the 30* rule because it is not roll sensing, correct? Because the roll sensing deployment feature only started in '04+...

So the only time the side curtain bags should deploy is in a side impact?

Just want to make double sure because if we go back up in the mountains and I want to get a little adventurous, I don't have any airbags to worry about unless I hit something. Because I do not have an off switch for the RSCA.
