Are the steel tariffs affecting the steel fab industry?

I'm curious if the current steel tariffs are affecting the builders of the bumpers/sliders etc?

I know in my industry I'm seeing some hugely inflated numbers. We went out a bid for a 4 sided tower for a wireless telecom facility and the numbers came back at close to 1 million and that's just for steel! Not for the actual GC work itself.

Not sure if this is affecting Pelfreybilt as they're looking for outside investors to "right the ship" I surely hope it doesn't hurt these small businesses or our pockets when it does come time to shell out the money for these things.

If it hasn't yet, it certainly will, unless something is changed in the mean time.It is pretty well known that all a tariff is is a tax on the people of the country that places the tariff. So far, each tariff has been reciprocated by the target country of the tariff. Of course, the companies pass the tariff on to the consumers. This is all basic stuff that has been known for years and, historically, tariffs have never worked as intended. Any benefit from the tax cut has been wiped out by the tariffs, except for the super rich...Mark

Unfortunately most of the countries the tariffs are being levied on already have tariffs on goods coming from our country and our government allowed it to happen. In some cases these countries have flat out bans on certain goods coming from the U.S.. I think with the amount of goods the U.S. buys, it will not take long for these countries to cave in. Their economies depend on us too much. We are already at a disadvantage with labor costs when it comes to manufacturing especially when other governments keep labor costs low and here unions drive the labor costs up. I personally know someone who had to go down to Mexico because the government closed their manufacturing plant down because they were paying their employees too much. Officially, they didn't want to disrupt the local economy, unofficially they wanted to stay competitive with China and the likes. It's pretty hard to compete with that when in the U.S. unions are fighting the opposite battle. Add in that other countries don't honor patents, in some cases by law are allowed to copy our patents and we're even more at a disadvantage. I think this has been long overdue unfortunately and in the long run will be better for us. At least I HOPE.

Maybe so, but those were also already baked into the economy. I think the the "some countries"that you speak of is China and I agree with you. Canada and Mexico are not in that group. What I said about tariffs goes for those countries (China) too and they have no problem screwing their population. Our economy was cruising right along, but now inflation is increasing and the Fed will probably look at not raising the interest rates, which were really too low. A good indication of how bad an idea tariffs on Mexico and Canada are is the fact that they want to give a 12 billion dollar bailout to growers that got the butt end of this deal. World economics are complicated and there really only seems to be 2 people on earth that think tariffs are a good idea. I remember the old joke about hoping into 1 hand and pooping into the other, to see which fills up first. I do really want fair trade, but the wrong "enemies" were attacked, mostly...Mark I think that it is funny that many times in the past, when my friends and acquaintances were talking about "buying American" I would point out that they would have to be willing to pay more for many things. I would say that that means no more Walmart and the eyes would get big and they would say something like "I'm not going to quit going to Walmart". You can't have it both ways...

Anyone ever notice how gas and oil prices will rise when hurricane's start heading into GOM? Suppliers will bump the price of both right, especially at the pump. I've worked in oil industry for 10+ yr know that a fact.
With the tariff talk I see suppliers and retailers doing the same with those products. Which is called price gouging wouldn't you say.
With the way the economy is rolling suppliers and retailers are going to up prices
for their bottom line, after 8 yr of stagnant growth. The tariff talk is perfect cover.

Haha no politics and then you bring him up... if you don’t think this has anything to do with HIS tariffs then you are extremely disconnected with the steel industry.

The links you posted, to me are the hype surrounding the subject.
Not the first talk of tariff wars I've seen playout over the years.
First link had some cool graphics going on second link had the word "could" in the title, noted your comment about titles, Did read the articles.

How I see it POTUS is trying to level the playing field possibly lower tariffs for all involved, think that's the end game. We'll see what happens.
Folks I know that are in the steel fab business, Industrial process equipment, Nascar type builds, decorative fencing etc. Have not seen any spike in prices tariff related just normal bump from the upswing in the economy.
Market bumping near 26k steady rise since March looks good to me.
 
For sure tariffs are bad news, bad business, are a tax. They are embedded in economic policy have been for centuries and are not going away. I see no reason not to upset the apple cart for a better if posible tariff rate. If it hurts for a bit and in the long term is better wouldn't you say thats a win.
