Are these interiors just fragile as hell?

I've had my truck for 5 days, and I keep finding new scratches all over the interior. On the doors, steering wheel, and center console. I work in an office. I don't have tools and shit with me. I don't understand how all these scratches keep occurring.

What model and fabric options do you have?

I have a '17 TRDORP that I got 1/17 and no issues.
 
Yes the plastic scratches just by looking at it. The fact that it is black makes it really noticeable. If it were a lighter color scratches certainly wouldn't show up as easily.

I had a '99 3rd gen and an '89 Hilux. The '99 3rd gen plastic was definitely more durable than my '13 and the '89 was damn near bulletproof by comparison.

I can't confirm this, and purely empirical statement, maybe it is a more "Eco-friendly" soy-based plastic like the wiring sheathing and less durable? Anyone know if either is the case?
 
Yes the interior plastics scratch SUPER easy. Was one of my big beefs with the 4Runner when I got it a few months ago. Do a search, you'll see it's been discussed before several times. I think Toyota f#%cked something up with the curing/hardening of the plastic and for whatever f#%cking reason never went back to try to fix it in the models 8 year life span.

For those defending it.....get real guys. I've had many cars that don't scratch anywhere near as easily as this "rough and tumble off-road truck" does. It's a Toyota f#$k up plain and simple. When you can't even wipe off dust for fear you will scratch the plastic, you know something is not right.....

My 17 that I've had since May is holding up really well, no scratches besides the rear hatch when a propane tank tipped over and scratched it. I see you are in Missouri, what part?

I sit in and test drive a lot of new cars, it's just something I enjoy doing. I can't recall the last new vehicle I sat in that didn't have plastics that could scratch easily. Could then be plastic base like you said, or just overall cost cutting? Either way it's lame.
 
Yes and no.. My VW Touareg also had plastic in it but didn't scratch every time you farted in it.. Still love my 4R but man she sho does love to scratch.

Be glad you did not get a 3rd Taco. Our '16 Taco has 18,000 miles and I already want to replace the door panel. We take care of both our vehicles and the plastics are my biggest complaint. I recently noticed my 3rd Taco's driver side bolster is wearing quickly as well.

My 4R has almost 10k miles and has held up much better than the Taco, still not great. I come from owning a lot of Hondas. New cars seem to have all the issues. My 2017 Accord Spot SE wasn't too bad. Our 2016 HRV was so bad we got rid of it after 10,000 miles.

Basically, new cars just aren't like the old ones. Everything seems too disposable. Not as durable as they should be.
 
I'm using the turtle wax ICE in paste form to cover any and all scuffs. It stays waxy and doesn't turn white, even on rubber or outside plastics.
 
Poorboys Natural look protectant is used on my entire interior every two months. It keeps the UV rays off and helps repel dust and the dash and plastics just wipe down easily. My in-between maintenance is meguiars quick interior detailer, it doesn't add any shine and doesn't remove the UV protection of the Poorboys.
 
I detail cars as a side gig. Every car I detail gets a coat of non-shiny protectant on the interior plastic. Personally I use Zaino products, seems to help a lot.

Meguiars quick interior detailer is an awesome product also and smells great

My impression is that the complaint is about easy scratching.

Do those protectants help with that? Or just make scratches less obvious?

Does anyone find particular areas of the interior more susceptible to scratching than other areas?

Worst seems to be the painted plastic: bezels, interior door handles, stuff like that. My GF's RAV4 has that fake carbon textured plastic, I'd rather have that but I guess the soccer moms like the painted accents.
 
I haven't had any problems yet with the painted plastics, but I have noticed that the black plastic on the doors and in the foot areas gets very easily scuffed and scratched. I think it would be less noticeable if it wasn't black.
