I'll be taking my very first trip to an actual off road park next month, and most of the guys are gonna be running blue and black trails. I know I need sliders and most likely rear LCA and diff skids, but I figured I'd take this opportunity to get a collaboration of everyone's armor.

So let's go...post pics of your skids, sliders, etc.

Include where you got them from an roundabout price!


I don't think i'm gonna run blacks on my first trip out, but it's a 3 hour drive back home so I don't wanna get stuck in PA

I run blue trails all the time with just sliders and a back bumper. The most important is sliders and then IMO skids. With stock bumpers just need to be more cautious of aproach and departure issues. I think either budbuilt or skidrow skids run about 650-700 for a full three piece set.
 
I agree. sliders would be your best first step. I can't imagine how f'd up my rig would without them.

From the way r truck looks you should be fine. of course it always help to have a buddy with tow straps. you could air down as well.
 
I have the All Pro sliders with the rear kickout ordered. I would strongly invest in Sliders, then skids. For skids, go with BudBuilt.
 
Budbuilt skids were my first mod. Next up are Stubbs sliders.

I got the stubbs HD-SKO sliders. Got them from a member on here. No skids yet, but i'm saving up for some bud builts.

Sliders were my first investment in armor - Rocky-Road Off-road (I don't recommend them though), All-Pro would be better to deal with. I have ordered a Budbuilt skid plate, I have a rear bumper guard from WAAG, and I am having a custom tubular winch bumper made. Air your tires down to around 12-15 psi for better traction and decrease in bouncing going over rocks. Disconnect front sway-bars if you have them connected. Recommend good first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, and recovery gear. Each time you go wheeling, you will go home with yet another idea of what to get next, ...., my next investment will be a Promax rear locker. I would not start off on the black trails if this is your first time out - get your feet wet on the easier ones first, then work your way up. You can have the ultimate out-fitted vehicle for the trails, but experience on how you use it is more important.

You going to Rausch Creek? Don't run the reds and blacks. I wouldn't recommend running the blue-blacks yet either. I think they'll be too much for your ride in it's current config. Depending on your offroad experience, I think you'll find the green and blues lots of fun. But thats subjective... Your stock front bumper is highly likely to get damaged. I know you have plans for that, but that is still my number one recommendation. Rear bumper damage (due to departure angle) is the next likely thing to occur. Not many options there unfortunately. For skid plates, although I don't have them yet, I like the Skid Row ones.
Since this is your first trip to this kind of place, treat it more as a recon mission, so you can see first hand what your ride needs for the kind of trails you like.
 
Yeah I'll be staying on the greens and blues, you really think blues will mess up my bumpers that badly?

Sliders are next on the list, I like the ones from Savage

skids, I definately should get, but the budbuilt ones are expensive, may try and get some custom made


how about the diff? will that be safe? should that have a skid plate too?
 
Liny- I run my truck on some of the tougher trails here in So Cal. I have sliders( All-Pro about $270) and a rear bumper ( home made)which I have bashed a few times. The rear diff is low on priority for protection IMO because the housing is fairly thick and also if you go slow you might scrape but not do any real harm. The main thing is have someone spotting you and if they notice you might hang up on your diff then change line or stack rocks. Order of precedence:

1. Sliders
2. Skid-to protect radiator to oil pan, transmision, transfer case
3. Bumpers
4. LCA skids, diff skids.

My factory skids have some dents in them and so do my sliders but without my sliders my rockers would be toast. Next on my list is BudBuilt or SkidRow front to back. Look at it this way 650-700 for full skids is a lot better then 4500 for a tranny or 1500 for transfer case.

hey another question for those guys with the BudBuilt skids...do they fit with a diff drop?

IIRC the factory ones don't fit after a diff drop, correct?
 
Yes the factory ones fit after my diff drop. I do not have mine (BB or SR skids)yet but a few people that have them that i have wheeled with have diff-drops and theirs mounted up but i am not sure if it took any mods. I am sure if you tell them when you order that you have a diff drop they will let you know if they fit or not.

Also skids are not just for protecting against rock. They will help you in mud also, by keeping it from caking up into engine bay(fan) and provide a smooth sliding surface to help keep you on top.

I talked to Bud on the phone yesterday, and he said that the skid plates from Budbuilt will acommodate the diff drop with no problem.

Also, when are you going to Rausch Creek? I'd be up to hit a few green trails and take my chances on a blue or two
 
OK the TJM is no longer being imported so if you find one and like it then jump on it since you may not get another chance
