Armrest Mod

Ok, so the stock armrest in 4runners are terrible! So I started searching around for an armrest that would fit in its place. I took the dimensions of the stock armrest which are 5"W/ 11"L/ 1.5"H and compared them to the armrest out of a Honda Passport which are 7"W/ 11"L/ 3.5"H. A perfect fit! 7" W is the most you can go without rubbing the driver/passenger seats when open. 11" is an exact match.

ultimately I wanted some real padding..a 2" increase from stock!

So the next step was to track one down. I was able to find one for free today. Unfortunately its not the right color but it was perfect for the experiment.All I had to do to make them fit was to swap out the mounting brackets.

Note I only used 4 screws. 2 go in the middle where the stock 2 screw are removed from. The other 2 go on either side of the latch. These holes were already present on my armrest, but were not in use. It is not necessary, nor recommended to place screws in the other 4 available screw holes.

Then the only thing that's left is to install! Now if you are looking for one of these armrest you want a padded armrest from a 98-02 Honda Passport.They come in 4 colors Tan, Beige, Gray and Black. The color I have is gray(not the color you want). Tan is the color you want because it will match the center console. Beige is pretty close to matching the color of leather seats, but seems to be a shade or two light. So anyways, on with the finished product!

I know you expected this comment...would have been icing on the cake if the color matched.

Arm rest is so crucial. Never having it on my 1st car, I had nothing to compare it to. But once you are use to something, it's hard to go back.

K.C. As stated in my post..Tan will match. I used what I had to see if it would work.

PIPEROO That compartment is on 99-02, so im not sure if it would still be able to be used.

that's very cool, never liked the armrest and mine has a nice elbow hole in the middle from the PO. One question though, some of the pics make it look like it might be wide enough to get in the way of the seatbelt latch. Does it or does it just look that way?

clever mod. im thinking about getting the wet okole pad for the center armrest to add a little padding...

i never even use mine as an armrest its to small. this looks like a nice mod i might consider. i've always been a fan of the 03+ year model chevy armrests. big spacious and has a small dip down gap so you can put stuff in it. probably to big for our 4runners though.

I personally prefer the way I rest my elbow on it... this looks a bit tacky... way too out of place.

It's like having itty bitty tires on a 4runner... the top parts just way too big.

I personally prefered to change my stock one for a number of different reasons...not enough cushion and is not wide enough, but there is no need for you to insult my idea either.:rockthrow: Judging by your signature and mine...we dont see eye to eye anyways. I posted this to give other 4Runner owners an option to improve their armrest..that is all.

Nice job but I wonder if you could mod the newer '99+ console tops to work since the dual space setup is nice to have.

my 4runner just sucks and has no potential, as why I'm looking for another. i'd have lifted it with big tires and all that by now otherwise.

Apparentley you didnt read any of my post...you just looked at the pictures didn't you? I soon as I find a tan one, I will swap them out and post pics.
