Japanese automaker announces recall to fix a problem with seat belts

WASHINGTON - Toyota Motor Corp. plans to recall about 90,000 Highlander sport utility vehicles in the United States.

The Japanese automaker wants to fix a problem that could prevent the seat belt in a third-row seat from securing a rear-facing child seat.

Toyota spokesman Bill Kwong said Friday the company had issued a stop sale of the 2008 Highlander SUV and hybrid version with third-row seats to retrofit changes to the seat belt.

There have been no complaints or injuries tied to the seat belts.

The vehicles under the recall were built between May 2007 and March 2008. Kwong says owners will be notified of the recall in June, and dealers will install a newly designed seat belt component.

Although this is a relatively minor recall, I hope that this is not the beginning of many more to come. The Highlander is the first vehicle under the new Toyota campaign to re-establish Toyota quality of the past.

Another Recall For Toyota

Highlander
Toyota Motor Corp. says it will recall about 90,000 Highlander sport utility vehicles built between last May and March 2008 to repair a problem with a seat belt that could leave rear-facing child seats unsecured.

Corolla
Toyota also recalled thousands of automobiles three weeks ago. The Japanese automaker said the bolts in the power window system of 539,000 cars, including the Toyota Corolla, can become loose and ultimately cause a window to shatter.

Matrix
The earlier recall involved 2003-2004 model year Corolla and Matrix vehicles, like the one seen above, equipped with power windows. Vehicles with manual windows were not part of the recall.

Pontiac Vibe
Also involved in the recall were nearly 123,000 Pontiac Vibes, built as part of a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors.

Well, we can put the Highlander on the Toyota POS list with the Tundra, Camry, Tacoma, etc. You know what, lets just call all Toyotas POS!

Man, the car business must be tough. Recalls on something that no complaint or injury files exist for? Wow. In my business, we will only recall if complaints come in high numbers in a short time for a given product. Kudos to them for getting on this.

With such high production numbers, it will be a long journey to re-establish QC of the past. If they pull it off in the next 5 years or so (defect levels of earlier Toyota days) it will be one of the biggest accomplishments of all time in any industry. One of my "bibles" here at work, The Toyota Way will have to be re-written!
