Hello All,
Just wanted to say thank you to the forum members for posting helpful information on our 3rd gen brakes. Been fighting an awful braking system for months now on my 1999 and finally fixed it thanks to some helpful information posted on the forum.
Items I replaced:
- New Master Cylinder
- New Front rotors/pads
- New Rear shoes/surfaced drums
- New rear wheel cylinders
- New front brake hoses/Inspected rear brake hose
- Flushed brake fluid and bled at least 5 times
Still had a terrible feeling brake pedal after changing all these components.
Here's what finally fixed it:
1. Adjusted rear shoes using the ebrake (did both methods of pulling it up a bunch while sitting still as well as pulling the ebrake handle while reversing a few times *keeping the ebrake lever pressed in the whole time*)
2. Finding a dirt/rocky road and stomping on the brakes around 30 MPH to activate the ABS. I had to do this a couple times due to the ABS only engaging for a fraction of a second. Might be better to do this with a little more speed for anyone reading in the future.
3. Finally, bleeding the brakes for the last time after engaging the ABS pump. This last bleed got out a good bit of bubbles that had previously been 'stuck' somewhere in the brake lines.
After that last brake bleed, my brake pedal is now better then it has been in a year or so! I assume after all that brake work and the constant bleeding/flushing I must have introduced some air into the ABS pump. After engaging the ABS on that dirt road, it seems I was able to get all that mess of bubbles back out.
Thanks T4R :yo:
