AT Tire Thread... Again

Hello all,

I am trying to figure out what to run for tires. I currently have Defender LTXs, and I really hate them in the snow. The front just pushes like MAD when there is more than 1/2" of snow on the ground. I was spoiled a bit with the Discoverer M+S that I used to have on my truck. I would buy another set of them for the runner, but I would like to have a single set of tires instead of 2. I had ripoff AT/3s on my truck and hated those too.

Use case would be heavy snow (250-300"/yr) and ice during the winter and, ideally, some trail running in the summer. Maybe some rocks, but nothing crazy. I just want to turn the runner into an adventure-mobile and would like to eventually get into some overlanding. I'm thinking/hoping 255/75 will fit with mostly stock suspension and FJ springs up front. (Suspension thread says they should with a 1/0 lift.)

Anyways, what I have found so far:

Kumho AT51 255/75-17
Cooper AT/W 255/75-17
General AT2 265/70-17

Additional Tires:

Falken Wildpeak AT3/W 255/80-17
Goodyear Duratracs 255/75-17
Toyo Open Country ATII 255/80-17
Nitto Ridge Grapplers 255/80-17

I know many people really love the KO2s, but a) I don't want to spend the cash on those with the AT2 as an option, and b) From what I can tell, they probably aren't quite as good in the snow.

I have found little bits and pieces of information on the AT51 and AT/W here and there, but nothing to really compare them. If anyone has any input, it'd really be appreciated.

I had the General AT's on a Land Rover for a few years, great tire, highly recommend them. The only other tire I would go for is the Falken Wildpeak AT3's

I like the Revo 2's I have now They have performed well in the current/previous winters here in MN. The new 3's look to have a little more sidewall. Not a fan of most AT tires as they seem to not have inadequate water channeling for heavy wet stuff and tend to just mush/slide.

Added to the list. Also, Maybe looking at 235/80, but not sure how well that'd work out in deeper snow.

I just put Atturo Trail Blades on mine, but it hasn't snowed since. lol They ride the same as the Duellers I had and do not seem to be any louder (possibly quieter). I'll report back once there is some appreciable snow here again.

Forgot about the Pirelli Scorpion Plus. They seem like another decent option from the little bit that I have been able to find.

My rec: Duratracs

They are one of the few AT's with good siping and they are snow rated. They perform very well in snow and ice, they are decent on dry roads (not too loud and behave reasonably), and are great off road for an AT.

I am on my second set and would buy them again without hesitation. I run them year round and they are great throughout our VT winters. If cost is real sticking point - I have read some good reviews about the Kanati Trail Hogs, which seem to use old molds/similar molds as Duratracs and cost a bunch less.

ive been doing some research on AT tires as well since i will be buying a set in a month or 2. based on personal reviews ive read & tireracks survey ratings, the goodyear wrangler trail runner is a very good tire. it rates 2nd best on tire rack & is at least $50 cheaper than all other top 5 tires. has low road noise & long tread life & all other categories like snow & wet get high marks. at ~$160ea for 165/70/17 it "looks" like it should be an excellent AT tire.

I ran two sets on my 4Runner since 2009 and never really had any complaints about them and snow traction and predictability was very good. Off road didn't have any issues either.

You’ll get about ~15,000 miles out of the Kumhos. They’re great in the snow as well as on rocky wheeling trails. Leaves a bit to be desired when encountering sticky mud. They are very quiet on the road, even with 4/32 tread left

I run a set of Kumho AT51 16" (C rated) on my FZJ-80, they balance well, are quiet, do well in the snow and rain. This being a heavy solid axle truck.

I have a set of Ridge Grapplers (C rated) on my T4R and, I can get them to bite in the rain just before the ABS kicks in. I expect them to perform as well, if not better than the Kumhos, the Ridge Grapplers have a more aggressive side wall. Had not had a chance to test them in deep snow.

Falkens FTW

I have 10k on my AT3s and they've been amazing. Tested in torrential rain, snow, ice and mud, they've handled it all without issue.

Only knock has been road noise but they're worth the trade-off. I had BFG KOs (which I loved) and these perform just as well for less money.

Another vote for Falken's. They're great in pretty much everything, have really impressed me in snow/ice. Have over 23k on them and still have tons of tread life

P-metric Wildpeak AT3W here and I bet they have seen a lot more rocks than most tires. They are not the strongest tire, but they are fine when NOT aired down unnecessarily. They have great traction in rock and are great on dirt. They are also great on road. They are also very cheap, especially P metric, and if you have DIscount Tire certificates, you only pay labor if you ever lose a tire.

The Grabber ATX also looks suitable for rocks, it actually seems to have better shoulder guards than the Wildpeak but I have not seen the ATX in person.

Without question the strongest AT would be the LT-D or E KO2 due to the third ply in the sidewall (not in LT-C). But I would not run LT again until I find myself forced into them.

Tread life will depend on YOUR USE. These are not street tires and what X person got is utterly irrelevant unless you know what offroad they do and how much of it.

Great tire for the money. I would pick up another set for my t4r (have them in 35's on my F-150) but, they don't come in the size I want to run.

Highly rec. the KO2s but according to your post. My next best choice would be the Generals. Theyre great tires for the price. You also cant go wrong with the falken wildpeaks. I had those on an F150 and they lasted about 55k miles.

I just got a set of these Goodyear wrangler ultra terrain a/t tires, im in Northern central valley California so not much a test for harsh winters, but they are rated for snow and also very nice deep aggressive tread and look nice and so far surprisingly quiet smooth ride. Just got em I love em. I was told dura tracs will be discontinued soon and they recommended these. They are just a tad bit cheaper than duratracs and are an America’s tire exclusive tire. I paid $980 for the set after tax 275/60r20 (without installation) they would not install because tires are slightly wider than allowed for my wheels, but thats ok I had another place do it for $80 and they ride great. With installation at America’s tire would have been $1050 and $1150 with certificates/warranty. Most sizes will likely be cheaper.

Does anyone happen to know if the clearance on the LX470s is drastically different than that of the 4Runners? He's running 285/70-17 with a level and some minor trimming and they apparently fit alright. I know the thread here says you can't run the 255/80 without a 3/2 lift though. Am I missing something?

Sounds like you're on the right track, I run the Falkens and I've been impressed with them on snow and ice the last couple winters. I've only heard good things about Duratracs in the snow too. I think either are as good as you can get without getting a dedicated winter tire.

The LX is larger than the 4Runner. It takes a decent amount of work to get 285s under a 4th gen.
