I didn't really even read the rest of the posts in this thread, I just meant that's how I bought my tires, LOL. In my defense, the tires were ordered before I found this forum

Got the P285/70R17 Cooper Discoverer AT3 tires installed today.
OEM tires weigh either 37 or 39 lbs (can't remember). These 4-ply tires weigh only 45. Most 33" tires are upwards of 55.
The tread isn't as aggressive. But I'm on paved roads 95% of the time. I'm hoping the fuel milage won't decrease too much.
Fox suspension and 1.25" spacers are going in next week. I'd like to start a build thread, but in the mean time, here are some pictures (shadows lightened for better viewing).

I am trying to decide if I want to switch out my stock tires. I have about 1k miles on them. I've been trying to read through all these posts, but I have some newbie questions...
1. Do the rubber on tires get hard over time? If I buy a new AT as a spare and leave it there for 5-6 yrs, will it be cracking, dry, and dangerous to use if I ever need it?
2. It looks like if I swap out my tires, the TPMS is attached to the hub and therefore I shouldn't need to worry about the TPMS needing to be replaced right? What are the TPMS rebuild kits for? Are they needed?
3. Would Toyota no longer warranty the TPMS, wheels, tires, tire rotations, etc if I get new tires outside of a dealership? Would Toyota Care be exempt on the tires?
4. Anyone know of any good tire places in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles? Looking at the cooper AT/3s getting great reviews, but they're hard to find. America's Tire a decent place to go?
5. Would you guys suggest nitrogen fill???

Thoughts from a 2014 limited driver
Some 2 cents on AT tires on a limited if it helps anyone. Sorry a bit long winded.
I have a 2014 Limited. First real "SUV". I love it. My growing family needed a bigger car, I refused to get a crossover (because car guy) and found the 4runner. I originally wanted a Land Cruiser, but I'm not ballin' like that yet.
Fast forward, picked up the truck, had Bridgestone something crappy on the 20's. Ick. Took one drive on a day with light snow and thought the 4runner was a mistake.
Ripped the stock tires off, put Blizzak DM-V1's on the stock 20's. Skinny winter tires win! A few ski trips, drove on a frozen lake and I can definitely say this truck is a beast with those on! Back to matching or beating the performance of my old Audi's and Subaru's (with snows). Happy!
Spring rolls around. Snow tires melt over 60 degrees, so I find a local guy with some FJ wheels and Toyo AT2's for sale. E rated in the stock 265/70/17 size. Hmm a bit much for me, but they were a good deal. I wasn't going back to those awful stock tires, so I took a leap of faith.
Initial Thoughts:
-Definitely a bit louder, not horrible, in my humble opinion, my fathers old Lexus on Runflats was louder from a tire noise perspective. Certainly louder than stock tires, but not the hum of MT tires that I hear. I expected this with a 16/32nd tread tire. I have no been on the highway yet, I'll report back when I do.
-Ride is better than the stock 20s! Ha, what? Yep. Less stiff, a bit more wobble and the turn in is definitely not as crisp, but acceptable for a truck in my opinion. It certainly doesn't turn the rig into a Chevy 2500 or anything like that.
-This set up, FJ wheels/Toyo's is about 2 lbs per corner heavier than the 20's/Blizzacks, so I think performance and mpg difference will be minimal for me. I don't drive highway all that much.
Things I'll try out:
-Offroad performance, I'm not hardcore, but I'll probably take it out on the beaches this summer and into the woods a bit.
-Fiddle with tire pressures to figure out what I like for best MPG, noise, road feel. Right now I'm set at 36 lbs all around. Anyone have advice here for this set up?
-Drive on the highway, report back.

i can't answer, but here is my input on the cooper AT3s. i went back and forth between michelin AT2s and cooper AT3s. Long story short, i had a 98 4runner with michelins. i liked the tread, and they lasted forever. the AT2 treads are different than the AT's i had. after getting a TON of help from many on this thread, i leaped with the Coop AT3s. (thanks again everyone. you know who you are. you rock!) From the start, i noticed a more defined feel to the drive. much better than the soft, cushy ride with the stocks. I just finished one ski season driving to the mtns every weekend. i LOVE these guys in the snow! now i'm just waiting for the endurance results.
sell the stock tires on craigs to offset your new investment.

Would you guys all say the ride is a lot stiffer with the coopers? From 1Engineer's review (and others) it seems like it wasn't too different from the stock tires in terms of stiffness. Did I read that right?

My stocks were dunlop grandtrek at20's. I think they went for $170 each new online? I wanted to sell them so thought i gave a good deal @ $500 for 5. I was happy. he was happy. it was easier to let them go after i rode the AT3's.

Nice update! Do you have a feel for the rolling resistance, IE mileage hit?

I really did the analysis when I had the SR5 and it was less than 1/2 mpg so that puts it in my margin of error. I think I did it for 30K miles or so. There are so many variables for mpg that even though you collect data for two years you could still be within one mpg or so ( tire wear, temps, different area, etc). Now they are on my TE I still get around 19.5 mpg overall. Mine are "P" series.

19.8 (in dash reading) was what I consistently averaged with my 2010 TE on Michelin LTX/MS2's, so I'd say the Coopers are definitely in the park. No knowledge here, but I think the thin, flexy sidewalls are one of the features that produce low rolling resistance, so again, you can't have your cake....

As a former aviation mechanic, I ran nitrogen in my tires at the time simply because I could...that & the fact we had a nitrogen bottle when I was in the 101st that was produced during WWII, which added to the badassery factor. Nitrogen is used in aircraft tires because it neither expands nor contracts due to altitude changes. Unless your truck can fly (& if that's an option I missed I'm going to be pissed), there is absolutely no reason to fill vehicle tires with nitrogen. On the other hand, if your truck does fly, I'd be happy to sell everything I own, get a Class III license, a minigun, & door-gun for you! PLEASE TELL ME YOUR TRUCK CAN FLY!!! :thumb3:

You have no idea how close I came to buying one & calling her the General Grant since my Great-great-great grandfather fought for the Union!
You've got a few options. Tire Crawler @ Save on Cooper, Dunlop, Goodyear, GT Radial, Kelly, Nexen, Pirelli, Toyo, and Vogue Tires | has the AT3 in stock size for $122. per tire. Shipping to the San Fernando Valley is $83., but I believe Cooper is still running a $80. rebate which covers your shipping, albeit by receiving a $80. prepaid Visa card.
You also have a better option of having the tires shipped directly to any Allen Tire store and installed there. You'd still get the rebate since that come from Cooper, and in that case there is no shipping fee. The closest Allen locations to you would probably be Cerritos, Whittier, or Torrance.
Two other possibilities you should at least be aware of would be with Online Tires Onlinetires.com - Lowest Tire Prices on the Web. Period! who isn't competitive on Cooper prices. However they have the cheapest prices on other choices, such as the Mickey Thompson Baja STZ, which is made by Cooper on the AT3 carcass. It's very impressive looking with a arguably better off road tread.

The STZ P stock size is $151. per tire from online and you can avoid shipping charges by picking up from them directly, as they're located in Cerritos.
Online is likely also the cheapest with the Nitto Terra Grappler, which in the P stock size is $142. Again that's available without a shipping charge by picking it up from the warehouse. I'm not sure on the Micky's, but American's Tire (the name Discount Tire uses in California) price matched the Online price for the Nittos.

I'm not clear on which T4R model you have, however from personal experience I can tell you the performance on and off road is excellent, and it looks as if it was made for the Trail.

Awesome thanks Maz! I called America's Tire and they said they could price match the price at tirecrawl. Saves me about 100 bucks and a far trip to whittier. The only thing the guy said is that I can't get the cooper rebate anymore if i do the price match. I call BS though because the rebate is online through cooper...
