AT Tires

I don't hardcore off road.
I do have to drive in snow and ice in the winter.
Hands down the best "non-hardcore off-road tire" I have ever owned (3 sets in my life) are the Michelin LTX M/S.

They are quiet, they last forever and a day, they now come factory siped and they are incredible on ice.

I do not hate[/I the factory tires on my TE, but they are not even in the same league as the Mickeys when it comes to snow and ice. When it needs new tires, that is what it will get.

Hopefully the LTX MS are better than the MS2. I was not impressed with them and ended up taking them back to discount. Their snow performance was not very good for such an expensive tire. I now have KO2s that are giving me comparable mpg and better traction in the snow.

I have to say the best tires I have used so far are the Cooper ZEON LTZ in 275/55/20 on my stock 2011 Limited. No rubbing, fit perfectly, but the traction in snow, dirt, rain and anything is superb. The tread life is also the best I have found yet and there is actually very little road noise while maintaining a very aggressive AT look. Very few people talk about the Zeon LTZ tires but I absolutely love them. I have had BFG A/T KO, Pirelli Scorpion ATR, and Hankooks before I went to Cooper Zeon LTZ and now I will only be using these. I am just about to order another set with some aftermarket wheels now; just trying to find some nice 20" wheels.

I'm looking for opinions / pics of the Kumho road Venture AT51. It is a new offering from Kumho, and the reviews seem to be pretty solid.

Tire rack has them rated the #1 offroad tire behind the KO2 ... but that's taken with a grain of salt. I know Kumho have been mediocre in the past but everyone is saying with this tire they have turned a corner in the offroad tire market.

I like the more agressive sidewall when compared to the other tire I'm considering - the Grabber AT2. I've had the grabbers on a 2nd Gen 4runner and I was a fan of them. I am just craving the aggressive look the KO2 gives - and shopping around for options before just biting the bullet on the BFG.

In the end I may just go with the KO2 - but I want to do my due dilligence and look at the competition first.

I would love pics of a stock TE running the Grabber AT2 or the Road Venture AT51.

Tire rack has them rated the #1 offroad tire behind the KO2 ... but that's taken with a grain of salt. I know Kumho have been mediocre in the past but everyone is saying with this tire they have turned a corner in the offroad tire market.

I like the more agressive sidewall when compared to the other tire I'm considering - the Grabber AT2. I've had the grabbers on a 2nd Gen 4runner and I was a fan of them. I am just craving the aggressive look the KO2 gives - and shopping around for options before just biting the bullet on the BFG.

In the end I may just go with the KO2 - but I want to do my due dilligence and look at the competition first.

It was just released in February, but has been getting high marks so far.

Yes. They pack right up in gumbo mud. I don't generally do mud unless it is absolutely necessary. And If I have to I go with momentum over grip. In the case below neither momentum nor M/T's would have made a difference.......

All 10 miles I have on them have been great.:first:

I don't notice the weight, as I dropped a ton in the rim department, but the sidewalls are significantly stiffer. No more nose dive. I was never bothered by it to begin with, but that was the biggest difference I noticed after install. They track well, and the ride is great (firmer, but not harsh), but they did require a significant amount of weight to balance, at least to my eye.

They're incredibly quiet. More so than my outgoing bridgestones with 40k on them. But I imagine that has more to do with the fact that I had 40K miles on them... The dry grip is fantastic. No more squealing around every damn corner. I can't wait to get them in the dirt/mud. Also, I'm eager to try them out in the rain, but not so eager to give up this beautiful weather we're having. Will report back once it goes back to $hitty Houston weather again.

You can't go wrong with them. I'm running stock size, but load E (LT265/70/17). They fit well enough and look great with the new rims I have on now. If you're running stock rims, I highly doubt you'll have the rubbing issues I'm having.

I ordered a set of these yesterday after discovering they have just released a 255/75/r17! K02's were out of my price range and I love the look of the Falkens and Grabers but they're unavailable in this size. The Khumos have great reviews so far and are mountain snowflake rated (also a must for me) so I rolled the dice.

My ONLY reservation has been the size. Ideally I would prefer a 275 but the ATP only comes in 265 or 285. I am afraid to run it in 285's and with the lift I have planned I don't want to have the stock size.

What size did you go with?

I'm running these also and have used them on and off road. I'm very happy with my choice haven't let me down.

I've narrowed it down to either King using ICON springs or the OME BP-51 setup. Somewhere between 2.5" to 3" total.

Stock but they also come in a 255/80 I believe. If I wasn't in need of tires at that moment I would have waited for them to get the 255 in.

Edit:I'm wrong that is not am option. What lift are you going with?

General Grabber AT2

Just a long term update on my General Grabber AT2's. I had to replace 2 in February at ~47K miles due to puncturing a sidewall on a rock while off roading. At that time comparing new tread to old it looked like I still had slightly less than half of the tread left after 45K+ miles. The rubber in the blocks was getting a little harder and there were a couple small chunks missing from playing in rocks. Today, and roughly 53K miles since mounting the original set I had to replace the other pair. Again, a non-repairable sidewall puncture from something on the drive home last week. I had the good tire from February mounted as my spare, and I kept the good tire from today to put in the shop, just in case I have unforeseen problems before I am due for tires again. I simply didn't want to replace one tire on either occasion due to the amount of wear vs a brand new tire. This is why I replaced them in pairs. They never got noisier than a slight hum at highway speeds after about 40k and that was not a consideration when looking at replacement.

I had no hesitation in ordering the same tires as I had mounted in 2014. I have been completely happy with their performance off road as well as their longevity on the mostly highway driving they have been run through. I'm just throwing this out as an FYI for anyone who may be considering these tires. :thanks:
