At what point does doing mods make a 4runner not a practical DD?

I have a 3" lift and 285s and I get about 15-16 around town. On the highway it is about 17-18. This all depends on who drives the most. My wife always gets better mileage than I do.

get a motorcycle for the summer dd and the runner for the winter. a bike will save so much gas and its wiked fun

My initial plan was to leave mine stock, too since it is my daily driver. My garage queen is modded and sucks on gas (93 octane only!) so I rarely use it as a DD. I've always modded every vehicle/bike I've owned so I don't know why I would think things would be different. I had a Toyota Pickup as my daily driver before and a year after owning it.....lifted and 33's. MPG in the toilet. My Runner is now lifted with 285's and I'm sure my MPG has suffered, but I'm not really concerned. I absolutely love it and I think that's the payoff. I usually drive my car more during the spring/summer, but so far I'm still choosing to be in the Runner. Even my bike doesn't get that much love anymore! I chose my car today to give the Runner a rest. However...the wife found out I was taking my car and asked for the keys to the truck! Ha! Even she loves it. I think if you plan on keeping it stock and concerned with gas mileage.....don't hang out on this site. I caved rather quickly after seeing all the nice rigs on here! Plus, modding the truck is easier on the wallet than a lot of other vehicles IMO. I love having another Runner back in my stable and after modding it....I'll never be without another one again. :reddance:

way ahead of you there i got a 06 drz 400sm it just sips fuel and ive put 17k on it

Great advice in here.

I'm not really concerned with gas mileage as much as I am concerned with the reliability of having a modified car.

I really have no need or want to do anything to the motor and that's normally when you run into reliability issues.

I look forward to joining the lifted/285...bad mpg group in the near future.

It's no longer a practical DD the moment you sign the papers, completely stock you'll be getting 18/22. Built w/33's you'll be getting 15/18, I'd recommend getting a DD before a toy.

I don't see anything wrong with having it as a daily with just 18/22 stock.

I have been getting close to 300 miles a tank and only fill up about every 5 days, which is fine for me.

i think he means compared to most other small vehicles... my gf's 08 honda civic gets about 30+ mpg which is a better DD then my 4runner even if it was stock.

You cant compare a 4runner with an 08 civic. Two totally opposite vehicles. The 4runner is a big block. I DD mine with 35's. I knew it wasnt going to get good gas mileage but im use to it. It becomes unpractical when you can't afford to drive it. If your willing to couch up the cash for gas do it. If your worried about gas mileage dont even consider lifting it.
