Purchased a used 2000 4Runner with 155k mi on it.
Unknown on last ATF flush/change.
Noticed no apparent transmission problems--seemed to shift smoothly throughout the trip. No lurching or anything.
When I went through to check fluid levels, etc., noticed that ATF was brown and smelled slightly weird. Smells kind of like a normal petroleum product, but I'm also unsure of what normal ATF smells like. It blotted brown on a white paper towel, but was dark red on my fingertip. No metal shavings in it that I could tell.
I'm pretty concerned. I want to take it into the dealership to have it flushed, but a lot of reading says that can cause even worse problems.
Should I drain/fill until the fluid looks better over the next few thousand miles/oil changes? Or should I do a flush?
Or did I just majorly **** up and buy myself a tranny overhaul project?
