audio gurus needed

OK, I'm not an audio guy at all, and I've been researching.

On some of these units that you hook your phones to.. in my case an iPhone 5....can you see apps from your phone on your unit, the screen?

For example, Google Maps...if I pull this up on my phone, will Google Maps pull up on my screen?

I'm not talking about a specific unit here....but on the units that you connect your phones, Android or iOS, is this usually the case?
