Audio Problems

Guys,

About a month ago I replaced my factory HU in my 3rd gen with a Sony CDX-GT700HD and left my stock speakers alone. Since that change my speakers have sounded like garbage. The only way I can describe it is that there seems to be nothing but highs and no mid bass at all. (I have played around with the EQ settings) This weekend I replaced all of my stock speakers with Pioneer TS-A1702C components up front and Pioneer TS-G1343R 5.25's in the rear doors. I notice no change at all in the sound. Very dissapointed to say the least. I know that I have everything wired up correctly and I just can't explain what I am hearing except this Sony HU must just be garbage? Am I missing something here? I mean the factory radio and speakers actually sounded better than what I currently have now? I know I am not going to get much bass at all from 6.5's and 5.25's but it really sounds bad. I am at a loss and very frustrated.

I looked up your unit and it is equipped with a high pass filter which would take all the low frequencies out. If this is turned on, you won't hear much bass response.

I just ran out and checked and I have the HPF actually set to OFF like it should be. Darn it I was hoping that would have been it.

Too bad I was hoping that was it too. What happens when you turn the bass up on the manual EQ or one of the programmed EQ settings?

I mean I can tell the manual setting makes a difference, it just seem that even having it cranked all the way up it sounds worse than it did when it was all factory stuff.

I'm going to play around with mine later and turn off the high pass filter. I haven't really used it without since I have a sub, but I still have the rear stock speakers. I haven't really listened to it because I replaced my front speakers pretty soon after I got it. My only thought is that the speakers just aren't handling the 17 watts rms from the new head unit. Stock systems don't put out that much. Around 5 watts probably.

Yea, I really did not want to have to run an amp on these speakers, and looking back I am kicking myself for not looking harder at an alpin HU and the alpine power pack to go with it. I really do not want to drop $200 on an 8" bazooka but I fear that may be my only option.

Okay I am digging this back up because I am still very unhappy. I am wondering if I possibly have a phase problem when I replaced all of my door speakers. If I remember correctly the front and rear doors had different color wiring for positive and negative for the front and rear doors. I do not recall the colors off the top of my head. Can anyone point me to were I can find what colors are what for my 2002 4Runner? I want to take the door panels off again this weekend and make sure I have the wires on correctly. All the wires were solid colors I recall. Thanks guys!
