Audio system question - please help

I own a 2004 SR 4Runner which came with a JBL single CD, tape deck and 10 speaker system. I would like to know if its possible install a newer 6 CD changer w/MP3 system. I found one unit to upgrade this system to, it'a a Model # P1803, part # 86120-35340, a JBL 6 CD changer that reads MP3s, which is the premium system that the new 05's and 06's come with. However the person selling it says that this radio only fits a 2004-2006 4-Runner with JBL SYNTHESIS. I called few toyota dealers and they don't have a clue about JBL SYNTHESIS and whether or not this systems would work in my car. Does anybody have any useful info to share, also if this particular system won't work for me, is there another option so I can have a Toyota 6 CD changer.

Audio upgrade

I was in the same situation... Do I upgrade my stock single disc stereo or upgrade the audio source. I went with the second option and am very happy with it. I bought a 20GIG IAUDIO X5L and used the USA SPEC converter to hook it up to my stock stereo. I am so pleased with the results that I would definitely recommend it to other fellow T4R members. I could not believe the instant sound quality upgrade.

Long story longer, I kept my stock stereo and put my whole music library on the X5 along with some full length movies. What I like the most about it is the bass and clarity of sound. I'll try to post some pics tonight see if you like it. One thing though... I ended up building a little holder for my X5 in the cubby hole behind the shifter (I have to give credit for the idea to a fellow member but the name escapes me). It has a factory look and I have gotten several complements from my friends. Most think that I have a sub in the back but I don't. I did not have to worry about the power source for the X5L as it has a 35 hour battery life (4300mA)which is plenty for me. I charge it every couple of weeks. Anyway, I'll try to post some pics of the holder and the X5L tonight.

Thanks for the info, I'll look into that system. What I was looking for primarily was some information so see whether or not this In-dash 6 CD changer w/MP3 would work in my car. Do you have any additional info about this.

I am going from memory but I am pretty sure you can replace your unit with the mp3 version. The easiest way to tell is to get pix of the back end of both radios and if they are the same you are good. Try searching the forums as I think I have seen people discuss this. Good Luck

Unless you are getting that unit for a great deal I would bag it for an Eclipse or Alpine head unit. Both are FAR superior and you can find a decent deal which would cost you the same, or less, than the Toyota unit, plus you would get more options.

This is what I went with and its sick. Alpine IVA-W200...I can hook up everything but a grill to it..haha! I have a IPod cable that allows me to control my IPod from the touch screen on my head unit...wicked! Then it plays just about every format you can throw at it...and being a DVD player you can put alot music in Data format on the DVD and you will have a never ending supply of music. My Ipod is hidded in my glove box. I have it hooked up to factory speakers right now and its alright but I am installing an Infinity BassLink T and some Eclipse SA8364 speakers...just need to find all the "correct info" before I install them.

Audio system setup

Thank you all for your replies, the system that I have in mind to upgrade to will cost me about US$150. The alpine system looks and probably sounds great, but I don't think I'll spent that kind of money if I can install this other system. I still don't know if it's compatible with my car since not even Toyota seems to know about this JBL Synthesis will work in my car. Any ideas??

According to my '03 brochure, all of the 10 speaker systems were JBL Synthesis. Look at the speaker grills on your doors...my 6CD/10 speaker system has JBL Synthesis on all of them.

The Synthesis systems do some of their audio processing in the amp, not in the HU, so even if pinouts are the same, you still might not have MP3 capability. Just depends on where the decoding is actually performed.

I would think a dealer/parts dept would have part number cross references of some sort. Have you asked the seller what he's basing the 2004-2006 numbers on? I don't think there was any difference between 2k3 and 2k4 in the audio systems.
