Audio upgrades

Hey I just bought a 1991 4runner and it has a stock sound system. Th at does not sound good at all!! I was wondering what is best upgrades would be.

I'd start with new speakers, 20+ years does take a toll on them.
Next would be a new head unit. A simple AM/FM/CD may be a big improvement.
